A good start in getting to know ASF 18 Sept. 2004
By John Mellberg - Published on
Format: Audio CD
This is a pretty good collection of tracks from the electro goth/ post-punk band Alien Sex Fiend. A band far ahead of their time. Consisting of Nik Fiend, Rat Fink, Mrs. Fiend and a host of guests that varied from record - record; ASF put out some 15 records in the 80's through to the present. For the unitiated, this is a good record to start out with as it captures the group at it's best with particularly classic trax from their albums "Acid Bath" and "Here cum Germs". I'd have given it 5 stars, but for them excluding content from (what I think is) their peak of creative output, the album "Another Planet".

ASF is probably one of the best bands in their (rather broad) genre. They are one of the few to have a sense of humor and clever wit too, their lyrics are sometimes dark/brooding at other times totally funny but never dull. Musically they can only be described as a dollup of punk, a teaspoon of funk, a bad sci-fi soundtrack, a bit of dub (to be noted in the analog effects and looping), with an Addams Family sensability. Sort of a "Doctor Who" episode on acid! I think fans of Marilyn Manson, orgy, and other contemporaries would like this and clearly see the roots of those modern sounds. I think Punk fans would like this too, in the 80's I first got "turned on" to them and thought they were a natural next step from some of the darker aspects of punk and post punk. Very infectious stuff!
