BBC Review

"Ain't slowing down, I only know speed," raps Estelle on All of Me's second track. Not when it comes to getting this album out – the Londoner's third LP has been clinging to the release schedules since 2010. In that time, its first two trailer singles – the David Guetta-produced Freak and the rather classier Fall in Love – have both been nixed from the tracklisting.

If this suggests a lack of confidence in All of Me's commercial potential, that's not entirely without founding. After opening with a pair of bragging rap tracks – Estelle's living the life! Estelle's an international jet-setter who's mates with Chris Brown! – All of Me settles into a more subdued groove. At its core are a clutch of sleek, shimmering neo-soul songs reminiscent of early Erykah Badu and Mary J. Blige.

Estelle carries these off well enough – her vocals are more confident than before and her lyrics deal with proper, complicated adult relationships. "I can be so pretentious, but he likes me just the same," is not a line likely to feature on the Willow Smith album. However, none of these tunes sound primed to rival the likes of Adele or Emeli Sandé for playlist space.

Hence the album's bet-hedging. As well as those incongruous rap cuts, All of Me includes a funky Janelle Monáe collaboration called Do Your Thing and the bouncy Back to Love, which seems to want to rewrite Coldplay's Viva la Vida. Of course, Estelle knows from experience how one hit can sell an album; her last one, 2008's Shine, went gold off the back of the chart-topping American Boy.

The lack of standout hits here is disappointing, but All of Me's Achilles heel is its conversational interludes. They're not just dated and gratuitous, but also a knock-off from another record. By the time Estelle name-checks "The Miseducation" on the album's penultimate track, the damage has been done. It's already clear that All of Me isn't in the same league as Lauryn Hill's genre classic.

The quality of the Cd is questionable- CD 'sticks' on 2-3 tracks - not worth the hassle of returning or exchanging, hence only two stars!

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay 3 Mar 2012

Really upbeat. The interludes are kind of lame. Maybe they are not lame; maybe I am too old(34) to understand their usefulness. The last track with Janelle Monae was a great way to end an otherwise uninspiring album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Estelle goes in a different direction with "All Of Me" 2 May 2012
By Perverted Alchemist - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
British born singer Estelle is what one consider a multi-faceted performer. She's great at doing hip hop as well as R&B and dancehall. She put all of those talents to use on her 2004 debut "The 18th Day"- a record that had seen considerable success in the United Kingdom. As talented as she was, she initially had trouble getting in the American music market. That was about to change when John Legend (who appeared on two songs on her debut) signed her to his Atlantic distributed imprint Homeschool Records as the flagship artist. A few years later, she released her sophomore album- and major label debut- "Shine", an album that was mostly hip hop and dancehall inspired. She landed a huge hit on American shores with the Kanye West featured "American Boy", which was produced by will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas. Shortly after the release of "Shine", she ran into controversy over her comments about the issue of race in the British music industry. When the controversy died down, she pressed on to work on her third album which was originally scheduled for release in 2010.

After a couple of false starts and a few singles that didn't chart, Estelle finally released "All Of Me" in early 2012. On this new album, she drives home the point of making a straight ahead R&B record. The album is largely devoid of her rapping, save for the Orthodox & Ransum produced opening track "The Life" as well as the song about self-respect "Speak Ya Mind". She gets help from Rick Ross on the Don Cannon produced single "Break My Heart" as well as labelmate Janelle Monae on the Ne-Yo penned and produced ode to individuality "Do My Thing". Estelle also gets help from Chris Brown and Trey Songz on the David Banner produced track about touring musicians "International (Serious)". She reunites with Wyclef Jean on the Akon penned "Thank You" and gets optimistic on "Wonderful Life". While "All Of Me" is a strong record from Estelle, the album is burdened by too many spoken interludes. Out of fifteen songs, there are five of them- six if you count the one at the end of the aforementioned "Speak Ya Mind". If it wasn't for that flaw, this album could have been much better. Despite that minor flaw, "All Of Me" is a good album and shows that Estelle is a talent deserving of more recognition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do Your Thing 17 Jun 2014
By Gezellige_Poes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Every time I hear the music on the Kleenex commercial, it stays with me all day. Some days, it's my get ready song! Come to find out it is a song, "Do My Thing," by Estelle! Where have I been, right?! I had to have this song and decided to take a chance on the whole CD as well. The reviews cover the gamut; the negative ones kind of blow me away and then I'm reminded that music tastes and expectations are very subjective. I personally love the CD, including the segments where there is talking. Much to which I directly relate; nice to know others are experiencing similarly. Estelle wraps it all together in upbeat music and on point lyrics.

From "Do My Thing"
"You don't know where I am going, and so you think I am lost
I ain't on your page, OK so to you that means I'm off
When I dance, I dance to the beat of a drummer you don't hear and you can't see
So if I look off beat to you, well the problem must be you not me"

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, pleasantly surprised. 6 Mar 2012

For some reason, I didn't listen to Estelle in the past. Recently, heard "Thank You" on the radio and downloaded her album. I've been pleasantly surprised that I've been missing out. The album is hot! This will be an album I can listen to completely, not just a few tracks.
