This is a beautifully presented book with a good range of woodwork projects for both young and older carpenters. My son, who is 11, has already completed a number of projects and the book's instructions are clear, well laid out and easy to read. I would, however, add a few notes of caution. There are one or two mistakes within the measurements, notably on the woodworking bench when care should be taken to ensure that the bits fit together well. They have not detracted from the overall enjoyment, or the finished product, but if one of your child's pieces turns out to be the occasional inch out it is not necessarily them! The other thing I would add regarding the work bench is that it is a good idea to brace it to make it wholly sturdy, and to alter the height of it to suit a younger person and don't slavishly follow their height measurement. It is easy to raise a bench up as they grow, much more irritating to have to chop a load off when you realise they cannot saw on it, for example, comfortably or safely.

We adapted a couple of projects to use different wood as well. Our work bench, for example, is made of pressure treated ply rather than softwood and the designs adapt well for this. The projects are quite addictive so be prepared to fork out hugely when they get terribly enthusiastic! One other point to note, particularly for those new to this sort of thing, is that this is an American book and their nail/screw sizes etc are different to ours. Make sure you do a size comparison before you buy.

None of my cautionary notes should deter you from buying it, however, so long as you bear them in mind. Good book. We've had a lot of fun with it and so will you, although I've yet to see a squirrel sitting on it's seat with a corn cob in its hands!
