Charge monthly, not daily

Kindle Paperwhite won't leave you tethered to a socket. A single charge can last up to six weeks (based on half an hour of reading per day with wireless off and the light setting at ten).

Thinner than a pencil, lighter than a paperback. Hold Kindle Paperwhite comfortably in one hand for long reading sessions.

No distractions

Kindle Paperwhite is purposely designed as a dedicated E-reader. Indulge your love of reading without interruptions such as e-mail alerts or push notifications.

I own both the 2013/14 (2nd Generation) and the 2015 (3rd Generation) Kindle Paperwhite. What are the key differences of the new Kindle Paperwhite 2015? A screen resolution increase from (768 x 1024) to (1448 x 1072) plus a huge PPI (pixels Per Inch) upgrade from (212ppi) to (300ppi) gives you a much cleaner reading experience and less eye strain. With an adjustable light, text spacing layout changes and a stunning new font 'Bookerly' on the whiter screen - viewed at any size, in any light - gives more fluidity and makes it easier to read. This results in the closest experience to reading a print book on any portable device.

Include an increase in RAM (memory) from 256MB to 512MB, coupled with the 1GB processor means screen refreshes are faster, and the 6 inch E Ink Carta HD touchscreen is more responsive without any lag on page turns. The existing Smart Lookup features (Dictionary, X-Ray, and Wikipedia) work great with the new 'Word Wise' and 'Learning Vocabulary' reading tools, designed to assist you're learning, build your vocabulary and make reading more informative and fun.

Which is best? For me the new Kindle Paperwhite as it's more responsive and finally has a white screen - it no longer has the yellowish colour of an old book. And the light does not illuminate the bedroom any more. These changes alone are worth the investment. Whether you upgrade or not, you ultimately have a durable, lightweight, simple to use and feature-rich E-reading device. And with 4GB of internal storage it delivers thousands of books, or your favourite news and magazine subscriptions, anytime, anywhere.

*The VIDEO shows the difference in screen quality between old and new Kindle Paperwhite. See below for a simplified feature comparison list.

INTRODUCTION:-

Some folk might argue that e-Readers are going the way of Betamax and VHS videos, becoming outmoded, when the very latest lightweight tablets are equally comfortable to hold for extended periods, have higher resolution screens, and can perform a multitude of functions that an e-Reader cannot.
However, although those might be important considerations for the occasional reader, they don't apply to genuine bookworms like myself.
This new device basically epitomises everything that you'd expect from a state of the art e-Reader, and it's definitely an impressive achievement in e-reading technology.
The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, unlike many other past and current e-Readers, has a built-in light, which lets you read in poorly lit conditions, or actually even in complete darkness.
The Paperwhite weighs just over 200g, which is lighter that the average paperback book, and this means that it's less likely to put a strain on your arms and wrists if you're holding it for extended periods of time - and bookworms like me will be doing just that.
Furthermore, the Paperwhite is slim-line, it's no thicker than an average pencil (it's a fat-fighting 117mm wide). I figure that most people ought to be able to grip the Kindle with one thumb hooked around a side, and fingers placed around the other side. In terms of ergonomics then, this e-Reader ticks the box.
Amazon state that the processor is 25% faster than the old model, but they're reticent about committing to an exact speed.
The reverse side of the Paperwhite has soft-feel black plastic, which makes it very comfortable to hold. There's now a huge Amazon logo on the rear side, in place of the Kindle logo which appeared on the older model.

I have made an in-depth video review of this new Paperwhite. It shows not just the differences between the old & new Paperwhite but also many of the features of Kindles in general - features which will show you why reading a book on a Kindle can be better than reading a physical book (but if you prefer a real book in your hands, I respect that).

If you are in a hurry and you are loooking for one thing in particular, you may wish to use the time index below to jump straight to it.

The video covers, in this order:

1. (Starting at a time display of 0:34 into the video): The frontlight, and dimming/increasing its strength.

2. (At 0:59): How to toggle between displaying "Location", "Page number", "Time left in chapter" and "Time left in book".

3. (At 1:27): Comparison between the old Paperwhite's screen resolution (212ppi) & this new one's (300ppi) (N.B. Amazon has reduced the quality of my video. The difference in screen resolution is dead obvious in reality but mild in this video).

4. (At 1:48): The new 'Bookerley' font.

5. (At 2:14): Speed of page turning using the touchscreen.

6. (At 2:26): Using the `Vocabulary Builder'.

7. (At 3:17): Highlighting text - how to do it & the speed of it (much faster & easier than on the Kindle Keyboard).

8. (At 3:27): Annotating text - how to do it & the speed of it (much faster & easier than on the Kindle Keyboard).

9. (At 3:38): Responsiveness of the touchscreen when typing or turning a page.

10. (At 4:06): Moving to a different chapter/page.

11. (At 4:34): How to use the X-Ray feature (well worth looking at - it's a great feature).

12.
