Product Description

Product Description

"All Messed Up: Unpredictable Graphics" explores the important role that mistakes and accidents play in the creative process. In striving for perfection, we often make mistakes. In aiming for flawless work, things often go wrong. Sometimes these mistakes and accidents end up working to the designer's advantage. To realize this is to override long-standing preconceptions that define such occurrences as fundamentally wrong. "All Messed Up" creates a space for work in which mistakes, accidents and the unpredictable are celebrated. Featuring work by established and emerging graphic designers from around the world, the book illustrates how embracing and even seeking out accidents can create ground-breaking work. The book is divided into three sections: Mistakes (where something has gone wrong, such as a printer error); Chance (where chance occurrences or found objects are incorporated into a piece of work); and System (where a system is created to actively encourage unpredictability). It ends with a series of interviews with five leading figures: Ian Anderson, Stefan Sagmeister, Paul Elliman, Stuart Bailey and April Greiman.

this really reminds me of other graphics books i've got by designers likeed fella, tomato, paula scher, david carson, in that it has such a highend, intelligent concept: the design is really original -loads of tonguein cheek ironic crossings out, marks, mess-ups that made me smile, so postdesign!!- and the work by all the different designers is never less thenbeautiful...definitely one of those rare must-have design tomes....itcertainly has inspired me to start looking at mistakes, randominterventions differently. a really cool book!

Happy accidents! 5 Mar 2008

Format:Paperback
A superb book that celebrates some ground-breaking pieces of work that were created by, or developed from, complete accidents; some intentional and many unintentional.

This book is an inspiration to all innovative designers!

Cool Perspective. 14 Mar 2006
By Sean M. Harold - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I must say, there is no book quite like this... it contains great ideas for approaching design projects for those who crave the unorthodox. I absolutely love the pieces featured within. Though I normally look for inspiration in everyday life, this book will have you really thinking of everything you encounter in terms of its application in your next project. Don't be surprised if you second guess your normal methodology, either.
it began here 16 Dec 2011

I won't claim to be an expert on design (yet!). However, when I was young enough to happily read through any book from cover to cover, I came across this book during a roadtrip. Looking back, I feel pretty confident saying that I think this book sparked my interest in design and taught me that everything doesn't have to be perfect. Before that, I was a crazy little perfectionist when it came to my doodles of horses and my labrador, terrified of starting that new diary because it's too pretty. Afterwards, I learned to make my mistakes work for me. Now that I am older, I can actually appreciate the designs featured here, but the once anal-retentive child in me will be forever grateful.
Doesn't Deliver 2 Aug 2009

When I purchased this in 2007, I was disappointed that 90% of the graphics were not only tame, but dated.
Two of the visuals are quite beautiful and edgy. But generally, the only cool thing about this book is the title.
