Product Description

A Halloween short story by best-selling author Andrea Frazer.

DS Carmichael is accompanying his step-sons on their ‘trick or treat’ rounds in Castle Farthing, while DI Falconer holds the fort at Market Darley police station this Hallowe’en. In fact, it is DC Roberts who has drawn the evening’s short straw and has been dispatched to the small town of Carsfold, to the south of the market town, for a second interview with a householder, without a clue that an unexplained explosion will not only land him in hospital yet again, but kick off another case of murder for his two colleagues.

Harry Falconer is summoned to an address in Carsfold on the evening of 31st October when a man is found dead in his garden, a hollowed-out pumpkin jammed over his head, and his garden shed blown-up and fire-damaged. Carmichael is immediately summoned to join him and, together, they interrogate the victim’s neighbours, uncovering a plethora of damaged and broken relationships, in their search for his killer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Halloween Hullabaloo 28 Oct 2013
By ACB (swansea) TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Andrea Frazer has written a very funny short story occurring on Halloween in a small village close. Five neighbouring houses each have peculiar occupants none more so than No2 where lazy, unemployed, drunken, perverted philanderer Larry Jordan lives. His neighbours have reason to loathe him. An explosion in his garden involves DC Roberts and Jordan bringing DI Falconer from a cosy desk to a crime scene. DS Carmichael is in a Frankenstein costume accompanying his two step-sons on a 'trick or treat' circuit nearby and is recalled by Falconer to assist enquiries. He dutifully turns up still in disguise. The rest of the proceedings swing with quirkiness and hilarity as a murder investigation takes place.

This is a short story packed with oddball characters and humour. Some may seem familiar to readers, hopefully not altogether. Amusing, entertaining and well-written. Await more Falconer Files with anticipation.

Only a short story, but full of Falconer craziness. Loved it. Eagerly awaiting the Christmas story. Very enjoyable, warm hearted series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 18 Dec 2013
By Annie W
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the first Andrea Frazer tale I've read, and a short story seemed a good place to start; if so, this was not the one to choose. Having no familiarity with the main characters, I was happy with Falconer and his love of cats, disappointed by the overgrown child that was Carmichael, and indifferent to the stereotype that was Roberts, who appears (from the blurb) to have been included only as a regular target for injuries. Far too much time was spent giving over-much detail about too many neighbours with grievances against the victim; a bit of judicious editing could still have provided all the salient points, and allowed a little more time for the investigation and final outcome, both of which were far too rushed to provide any real satisfaction.

From other reviews, it would appear that this is meant to be a humorous series, but, while the main protagonists may have some strange quirks, I did not find the story particularly amusing. The characters were types, rather than individuals (the unemployed layabout, permanently drunk - so how come he seemed to be a successful lothario - lowering the tone of the neighbourhood; the long-distance husband; the teenager pretending to be worldly-wise; the retired person with nothing to do all day except clean, etc). Frankly, I couldn't see why the murderer bothered to kill the victim; he wasn't worth the effort! If this is the England which Ms Frazer experienced, I can understand why she moved to France.

Should I come across a free story by this author, I'd be prepared to try it, but buy one - I'm afraid not.

Just wonder how it would translate into a TV series, and who would play the characters of Harry and Robbie.

Very good read - policing with a sense of humour. Carmichael and Falconer are great, a modern day Sherlock and Watson, but not with Sherlock's seriousness. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars pleasant detective mystery
Written in a competent, but rather predictable way, and the solution as a result of information only revealed in the summing up after the arrest. A very domestic sort of story.
