5.0 out of 5 stars A unique account of a unique sub-culture 26 Jan 2002
Brian Belle-Fortune has undertaken the unenviable task of documenting the birth and life of one of Britain's most unique sub-culture's. More than rising to the challenge he has provided an exellent balance of opinion, assesment and fact. Features such as a glossary of terms make it not just an enjoyable read but a true education. Most importantly Belle-Fortune has produced something that will be appreciated equally by true 'jungalists' and scene outsiders alike. Turn the pages, open your mind.

Very poor book jammed with lots of flowery prose, assertions, rose-tinted reminiscing and name-dropping. The author's repeated attempts to "set the scene" really begin to grate as the reader is presented with something closer to a novel than any kind of historical document.

Text such as:

"The souls on the floor, individuals, all as one are cuttin' animated sculptures...they're avin' it."

Really got on my nerves as it recurred throughout the whole book. It's very thin on the ground factually and the overly-familiar vernacular style is more reminiscent of the sort of bore you find in a club who tells you that "raving isn't what it used to be" than a serious writer.

For a much better book on dance music culture read "Energy Flash" by Simon Reynolds.
