Product Description

The Christmas specials from both 1983 and 1985 in which the vets come home from the war to a land and a lifestyle about to change forever. James (Christopher Timothy)'s return to domestic life doesn't run too smoothly, as unable to open up to Helen (Carol Drinkwater) about his feelings, he ends up taking his anger out on Jimmy (Oliver Wilson).

5.0 out of 5 stars The best series 2 Mar 2009
A beautiful series I saw when it first aired on television in Australia. It has believable strory lines well away from the "spiced up versions" of classic stories now on tv. I don't need the classics spiced up with gratuitious violence and sex.

5.0 out of 5 stars Family Entertainment 28 Aug 2009
How lovely, more programmes like this should be made today. Entertaining and relatively innocent, all the family could watch. I am going to buy more of these DVDs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Trip down memory lane 10 Oct 2009

Easy to watch. Quality not super high tech. Gives you a nice warm feeling of old fashioned values. Lovely.(Not a mention of Christmas but still worth watching)

4.0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointing 6 Feb 2009
All the important actors are still the same, but the first special looks like a bad
clone of the original series if you watched series 3 before.
Obviously they had to recreate the set using different furniture, so everything
looks somehow wrong. The also changed the illumination - for the first
time you get the impression that there is sunny daylight in the surgery.
The role for young Jim was written badly - he seemed like the most annoying
child in the world.
Both specials feel like stretched TV episodes, missing any added value
you might expect from a 90 minute "movie". They tried to put in extra content - like
James' trouble of realigning with the life as a vet and a father - but don't
take the time to really do it.

A real fan of the first three series and good to see Carol Drinkwater back as Helen. These specials fill in the gaps between series three and four

5.0 out of 5 stars The Missing Christmas Special! 15 Dec 2008
If you expect either of these to be at all christmasy than you may be disappointed, as the only true christmas special was the as yet unreleased 1990 episode which was All Creatures back to its best with Tristan and Biggins battling for a place on the the team to ring the Christmas peal.
These are still vital episodes to complete your collection but Merry Gentleman from series 2 and the 1990 special are the true christmas specials.!

5.0 out of 5 stars Missing link 1 Nov 2008
By Liakos
Having gone through the excellent series 1, 2 and 3, series 4 felt somewhat strange. I was feeling that something was missing. Christmas special 1983 was really the missing link with series 4. The 1985 special could have been another episode of this lovely series but still top marks to both.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Christmas-y! 22 Aug 2011
Verified Purchase
BE WARNED! There is not so much as a mention of Christmas in these "Christmas specials." They were originally broadcast on or around Christmas, but are not set during the festive season and have absolutely no Christmas content. Perhaps this is less surprising to British audiences, but to us Yanks calling programmes like these "Christmas specials" is quite misleading. There IS a particularly heartwarming Christmas episode of "All Creatures," but you won't find it here.
