My Son aged 8 has just been diagnosed as having Asperger's Syndrome.
We are just at the stage of explaining to him what Aspergers is and how it affects him, we are trying to do this as sensitively as possible and without worrying him.
I bought this book yesterday as I had gone looking for (yet) more books to help explain and this one stood out as being a bit different,we have two cats ourselves and so I thought this would appeal to my son, as he loves the cats to bits and loves reading about cats.
All I can say is what a wonderful book ! As a parent it brought a tear to my eye, but also made me laugh too at recognising some of the things that my son does.
It explains very simply the basics of Aspergers through the actions of cats and kittens with wonderful(and very cute)photos and humorous quotes. It describes factually and sometimes poignantly how it affects the Aspergers child.
I sat down with him last night, and we read it together, and we laughed at some of the similarities, and talked through some of the difficulties he faces. The book is ultimately uplifting, and leaves you with a smile.
He loved the book and took it into school to show his teacher, I have just received a call from his teaching assistant to ask where the book is from as the school also want to get a copy as they too think it is wonderful, and will be good to share with his class.
I would recommend this book to anyone who either has Aspergers, or for parents and teachers to share with a child with Aspergers, or to explain to others about the syndrome.
Defintely a must for all parents of an Asperger's child !
