Book Description

4 Oct 2006
"All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome" takes a playful look at Asperger Syndrome (AS), drawing inspiration from the feline world in a way that will strike a chord with all those who are familiar with AS. Delightful colour photographs of cats bring to life familiar characteristics such as sensitive hearing, scampering at the first sign of being stroked, and particular eating habits. Touching, humorous and insightful, this book evokes the difficulties and joys of raising a child who is different and leaves the reader with a sense of the dignity, individuality, and potential of people with AS. This engaging book is an ideal, gentle introduction to the world of AS.

5.0 out of 5 stars This could have been written about my son. 13 Feb 2008
I was slightly dissappointed when I first received the book, I have been expecting a lot more writing, but when I began to read it, I was reduced to tears. I have a son recently diagnosed with AS and this could have been written about him. I think it will be a great book to give people who are finding it hard to accept his diagnosis and also a fantastic reminder for my husband and myself when our son is driving us insane with his quirky ways! Worth every penny, as are Kathy Hoopmann's other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have Aspergers and so do my cats 2 Aug 2007
I am 24 years old and I have AS. My mum bought this book for me as I have an afinity with our 5 cats who my mum shows and breeds. The book describes my world perfectly and it made me smile but made my mum laugh and cry. The pictures are nice because they are of cats but it is the words which mean so much. This book was esy for me to understand and it also helped me to see that there are other people in the workld who know what it is like to have AS. My firends are our cats and until they came, I was very lonely and played on my computer all the time. Our cats love me and I love them. This book is definitly worht buying if you come across aspergers syndrome. People are very intolerant of me with my AS but this book will stop them being intolerant and help them to understnad what its like - just like cats. Love from Adrian aged 24. Aspergers Adult

5.0 out of 5 stars What a lovely, lovely book ! 18 Jan 2007
My Son aged 8 has just been diagnosed as having Asperger's Syndrome.

We are just at the stage of explaining to him what Aspergers is and how it affects him, we are trying to do this as sensitively as possible and without worrying him.

I bought this book yesterday as I had gone looking for (yet) more books to help explain and this one stood out as being a bit different,we have two cats ourselves and so I thought this would appeal to my son, as he loves the cats to bits and loves reading about cats.

All I can say is what a wonderful book ! As a parent it brought a tear to my eye, but also made me laugh too at recognising some of the things that my son does.

It explains very simply the basics of Aspergers through the actions of cats and kittens with wonderful(and very cute)photos and humorous quotes. It describes factually and sometimes poignantly how it affects the Aspergers child.

I sat down with him last night, and we read it together, and we laughed at some of the similarities, and talked through some of the difficulties he faces. The book is ultimately uplifting, and leaves you with a smile.

He loved the book and took it into school to show his teacher, I have just received a call from his teaching assistant to ask where the book is from as the school also want to get a copy as they too think it is wonderful, and will be good to share with his class.

I would recommend this book to anyone who either has Aspergers, or for parents and teachers to share with a child with Aspergers, or to explain to others about the syndrome.

Defintely a must for all parents of an Asperger's child !

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes AS cuddly (almost) 21 Nov 2008
By Anya
A wonderful book! I have an 8 year old son with AS and have probably given away 20 copies of this book to friends, family and the school classroom. It is particularly good for children as it makes unusual behaviour seem understandable and OK, rather than threatening or strange.

Good -
• This is a simple book that tells of some of the traits of Asperger Syndrome (AS)
• Easy to read and understand

Bad -
• Expensive for what it is
• Focuses a lot on same things (misses a lot of positive traits of AS out)
• Makes it sound like everyone who has AS is male and as such that all cats are male too

Overall -
• Good for the very basics and cute pictures of cats but no use if you want any amount of useful information. Asperger's as with any ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) has a lot of grey areas and behaviour and traits are far from plain black and white as portrayed in this book. Hence why Asperger's is a spectrum disorder. There's a wide difference of severity between the two extremes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous and moving 14 May 2007
This is a beautiful book describing some of the characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome. It is easy to read, poignant but positive. A great book to share with family and friends of a child with Asperger's to give them a simple insight to some of the difficulties. I cried and laughed reading it - it described my son so perfectly!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wish Id bought this ages ago... 12 Oct 2009
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have just bought this book as my son was upset about being different.I wanted something to explain why its not 'bad' being different and I think this book does that. Each page contains a full colour photo and a aspergers related statement that accompanies the photo, its really nice to look at, some of the photos made us giggle as did some of the statements. Its not very in depth, but thats what I like about it. It is a nice book to read together or as a bed time story. I also let my family and friends read this, they ALL commented on how much they like the book and could see my son in most of the statements.
I also own All dogs have ADHD book. I would recommend both, although some of statements appears in both books.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best 26 May 2009
My son is 13 years old and just diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. Having been given a diagnosis and not knowing what, when, where or how to do anything with it, I purchased this book. This made my son cry and myself and explained exactly how he felt and what his world was like around him.

Trying to explain to other people what Asperger's is,is quite hard, but just letting them read the book is usually enough to explain. This made my mum cry as well.

This is for any age, not just the younger end, it just puts it so simply and beautifully, that you need no more to explain.

3.0 out of 5 stars Brief and didn't really hit the spot
Bit too short and generalised for my taste. Didn't really enlighten me or enchant me, despite loving cats and being interested in Asperger's.
