About the Artist

Regina Belle was born in Englewood, New Jersey. It was at Englewood's Mount Calvary Baptist Church, and then Paterson's Friendship Baptist Church (presided over by Belle's uncle, the Reverend Fred Belle), that Regina Belle began attracting attention with her vocal abilities. She sang her first solo in church at age 8; and by age 17, she was the church's star singer. Belle attended Dwight Morrow High School where she studied trombone, tuba and steel drums. After graduation, she studied opera at the Manhattan School of Music. At Rutgers University, she became the first female vocalist with the school's jazz ensemble. Belle's musical influences include Phyllis Hyman, Billie Holiday, Donny Hathaway, and Nancy Wilson. She was introduced to the Manhattans by New York radio DJ Vaughn Harper and began working as their opening act. She recorded the duet "Where Did We Go Wrong" with the group which helped to attract the attention of Columbia Records. They eventually signed her to a record deal In 1987, she released her debut album All By Myself. It includes her first hits "So Many Tears" and "Show Me the Way." Her follow-up album, Stay with Me, released in 1989. Belle recorded a duet in 1991 with Johnny Mathis, "Better Together" which appeared on his album Better Together: The Duet Album. Continuing her tradition of duets, Belle teamed up with Peabo Bryson for the songs "I Can't Imagine", "Without You" and "A Whole New World", which was the featured pop single from the soundtrack to the 1992 Disney movie Aladdin. The song hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and won the Grammy Award in 1993 for "Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal as well as a "Best Song" Oscar in the same year Later in 1993, Belle released her Platinum selling third album, Passion. The album featured the Disney hit "A Whole New World", "Dream In Color" and "If I Could", which reached # 9 on the R&B charts. Belle released Reachin' Back in 1995 followed by Believe in Me in 1998.

Regina's sensitive interpretations capture the essence of heartbreak through her use of earthy blue notes and elongated rhythmic phrasings.
Her voice is so unfeigned, and her lyrics are so heartfelt.
On "After the Love Has Lost Its Shine" you can literally feel the sincerity in her voice.
A great addition to this brilliant re-issue is the beautiful duet with Peobo Bryson "Without You", one of the most soulful and brillant love ballads ever written, that is available only on "Positive" and on two compilations: "Anthology" and "Bedroom Classics, Vol. 2 (US Release)".
This album (produced and arranged by legendary DJ Nick Martinelli (Stephanie Mills and Loose Ends) yielded the singles "Show Me the Way" (number two R&B for three weeks, spring 1987) and "So Many Tears" (number 11 R&B, fall 1987).
Martinelli also produced tracks on Ms Belle 1989 follow-up album "All By Myself / Stay With Me", which included her first number one R&B single "Baby Come to Me", produced by Narada Michael Walden.
Martinelli would produce her second consecutive number one R&B single, "Make It Like It Was", which went to number one R&B in early 1990.

A 'must' have for the real Soul/Jazz music lovers.

Debuts Don't Come Along Like This Everyday! 18 Aug. 2014
By L. Boki - Published on Amazon.com
Debuts don't come along like this everyday. With her natural nappy hair on the cover, "All By Myself" signaled the arrival of a new female voice on the block. She slowly became a staple on the dinner table circuit like "Diamond Life" did a few years before.
Songs like "Take Your Love Away" or "So Many Tears" show the range from subtle to grand. The heartbreaking "How Could You Do It To Me" is vastly different than producer Nick Martinelli's later work with Diana Ross on big international hits. Martinelli is credited with giving Stephanie Mills a new perspective. His work with Regina would be different than what he has done with Aretha. But on "All By Myself", his ability to shape new talent from the girl who once sang with The Manhattans. "All By Myself" would become the record most talked about at 1987-88 cocktail parties. Did this young girl have the ability to do all that her debut potends.
The tour de force is as much "So Many Tears" with its tribute to Billie Holiday and her hometown diva, Sarah Vaughn. But it's the reaffirmation of love in "After the Love Has Lost its Shine" that she tenderly, delicately dissects and offers a glimpse of love in the twilight hours of a relationship.
The Expanded Edition takes a more quiet storm approach to "So Many Tears" and "How Could You Do It To Me" though pleasant they are nonessential.
