Stephanie McCallum is a sensitive and reliable guide through Alkan's complete Recueils De Chant, (released in two volumes), and plays with insight and respect for the composer she's done so much to champion over the years.
Like the 25 Preludes, Le Mois and 12 major key Etudes, these 30 relatively short pieces are colourful, quirky and exciting, but uneven in quality of inspiration and depth of feeling.
I suggest anyone wishing to explore these pieces for the first time, should download the highlights first. The three Barcaroles from Op 65, 67 and 70 along with the first Chant Op 65 in E, which are amongst the composers finest short pieces. The Op 70 Barcarole in particular, is exceptionally profound and suffused with the same air of melancholy, despair and hopelessness that can be found in some of Schubert's Winterreise songs.
It's worth mentioning, that unlike Bernard Ringeissen on Harmonia Mundi, McCallum plays the Op 67 Barcarolle with all the repeats, and the download of the Op 70 Barcarolle, includes the curious but important linking passage that includes melodic references to the previous five pieces in the fifth book of Chants.
