This soft machine album represents the live group from 1976, Line up John Marshall Drums, Karl Jenkins Keyboards, John Etheridge Guitars with Steve Cook on Bass and Rick Sanders Violin, Recorded Live in 1976. With the two Johns in the group the Soft Machine took a more rock guitar sound, and away from the Jazz sounds of earlier versions of the band. As a consequence this album for me is probably one of their more accessible albums The original album on disc one is well played and easy to listen too with Guitar and Keyboards prominent, nice use of both electric and acoustic guitars through out. Stand out track s probably `white Kite', `Soft Space' and the `Odds Bullets and Blades' suite.
This version however comes with a second disc of out-takes from the original shows, showing how much more interesting an album this could have been with more funky and jazzy rhythms and Drum Solos. What would have made this album really good was if they had restructured it so that it was released as originally played, though I think the original alum does represent a very good edit of the live performances.
A further bonus on top of the 8 bonus live tracks is the A and B sides of eth soft Machine single `Soft Space' nice to have on CD for the first time.
This album is not a bad album, though later Soft Machine does have it knockers I like this album and re-issue with its bonus tracks.
