Cooke's debonaire, transatlantic tones are unmistakable...
-- FT Magazine, March 8, 2008

Product Description

Alistair Cooke was a radio legend, entertaining millions of listeners for over fifty years in his weekly "Letter from America". It was the longest-running one-man series in radio history, and every show was a virtuoso performance. Wise and witty, informed and informal, Cooke was the doyen of foreign correspondents. This memorable selection of Letters includes Cooke's reports on momentous events such as the assassinations of both President Kennedy and his brother Bobby, the LA race riots, the war in Vietnam and the My Lai massacre. Here, too, are his thoughts on technology and democracy, as well as his report on the Ali v. Liston heavyweight title fight and his Christmas 1967 tribute to the kindness of President Truman. The Letters are set in their historical context with a specially commissioned script narrated by award-winning BBC correspondent Matt Frei. As well as insights into cultural and political events of the time, we also get a charming sketch of Alistair Cooke's life in his adopted country. Whether the topics he explores are serious or humorous, Cooke's unique style of expression and analysis shines through in these classic broadcasts from the world's most famous letter writer and radio's greatest observer. 'Cooke's debonaire, transatlantic tones are unmistakable' - "FT Magazine".

Forgotten Genius 9 May 2010
Format:Audio CD
I purchased this CD on a recomendation of a friend, not always the best thing to do. For once the choice was right. I had listened to the original recordings that the BBC transnmitted on a weekly basis, but I belive that I was too young then to appreciate them. I had forgotten how good Alistair Cooke was at describing events and people.
I would recommend that these CD's are played to school children so they could learn about the great events from history and the people that contrived to make those events possible. Thank You Alistair Cooke for the many hours of pleasure that you have given me.

An Inspiration 12 Sep 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Wishing to take a break from just listening to music, I was looking for something different to load onto my MP3 player. There are a lot of audio books out there but they are often a bit of a let down because the person reading the book does not inspire the listener. I have found a few people whose audio titles provide an insight into history, politics, or science which I find very interesting and the way they deliver the `stories' brings inspiration. Alistair Cook is one of them and I just wish there were more of his `Letters from America' available on audio. You can however listen to more on the BBC website archive.

If you are interested the others are Spike Milligan / War diaries, Tony Benn / Diaries, & Dr Karl / Great Moments in Science.

perfect! 16 Jan 2012
Format:Audio CD
A perfect christmas present, just what my wife wanted. She has listened to it twice already. It gave her a lot of background knowledge for a book that she is writing.
