Product Description

Product Description
In Aliens vs Predator: Extinction the three fiercest species in the universe have been locked in a bloody, galaxy-spanning battle for years. With each new encounter it seems the on-going conflict will never end. After a small unit of Colonial Marines dispatched to planet LV-742 reveals the presence of both Predators and Aliens, it is decided that the conflict must end once and for all. After years of smaller battles, there is only one clear path to total universal supremacy: war. You must now defeat your enemies to ensure the survival of your species... or face extinction.

This is the first Aliens versus Predator game created specifically for next generation consoles. A real-time strategy game, you can create and control your forces as one of three species across 21 single-player missions with 10 upgradeable combat units per species. Decide your attack strategy; order up your own custom army from a list of units, choose your upgrades from enemy detecting vision modes to devastating weapon enhancements.

Each species offers unique attributes. As the Colonial Marines, you will count on your military training and the latest hi-tech weaponry from the Weyland-Yutani Corporation to save the human population of LV-742. The Predators must use their stealth and highly evolved hunting techniques to gain the respect of the council of Ancients. Aliens will attack in hordes to incapacitate their enemies, impregnating them, and using them to evolve into the ultimate biological weapons.

Players have access to a variety of units from low-end grunts to ultra-specialised warriors like the Alien Carrier (able to bring terrifying facehuggers to the battlefront), the extremely brutal and heavily armoured Military Predators or the hydraulically powered Marine Exo-Suit. Every unit can be upgraded to gain new abilities to become even more deadly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Best I've seen, but still lacking, 25 Oct 2003
By Mr. O'Neill "tech-wizz" (University of York) - See all my reviews
For any console this must be the best RTS out there. The thing is, the playability of it is far too short! That's what I found anyway. I'm used to spending weeks completing the campaigns and then months of playing skirmish and multiplayer battles, both of which aren't supported. So if you want to play it again you must play the preset levels again which isn't that much fun because I found I could complete the longest missions in about 1 1/2 hours, and the shortest in 10-15 minutes. There are four difficulty levels though I guess...

I think the races are very equally balanced and personally found the aliens the best, because with the carrier unit you can 'assimilate' the enemy's attack force into aliens. The marines are the most flexible with the widest variety of skills. The predators are the most 'elite' with only 12 supply points allowed per mission (these determine how many units you can have, 1 per unit usually).

This is a good game if you are new to the RTS genre, but if you are used to playing 'hardcore' RTS games like C&C etc. then you might find this a little simple. I'd certainly say this game is more quality not quanitity...

4.0 out of 5 stars Its Good, But there's Better, 8 Aug 2003
Alien Vs Preditor is a good solid RTS. It's probbibly a lot better than anyother console RTS game I have ever played. Its fairly balanced between the three races except the Aliens are a little bit weeker than the other races as they only have melee attacks, and they are the most difficult race to produce units for as u have to use enemys to do this.

Although it is a good RTS, it is no where near as good as most RTS on PC. When compared to C&C generals, AVP is a bit shody.

My main thought is that if you own a Console and no PC it is well worth ago. But if you own a PC you are better sticking to RTS's on the PC.

1.0 out of 5 stars Game over man!, 26 Oct 2003
This is a fine example of how....

...not to make a game.

AVP: Extinction in all respects is an RTS, but if you are expecting full scale battles, cunning tactitics and stratergy, and practical use of resource management, you're going to be very disappointed.

On the other hand, if you want bad graphics, poor gameplay, small skirmishes and uninspired level design, then this is the game for you.

AVP is bad for all the right reasons, and is a sterotypical representation of a missed opportunity. The graphics are abismal - too underpowered - and the entire game could have been done on the PS1. the maps are boring and lack detail, and the AI is absoultely shocking. Watch in total horror as you order your squad to deploy one way to find (for reasons unknown) that they have wandered off in the opposite direction (usually resulting in them being massacred).

Gameplay is very unrewarding. My biggest gripe is that enemy units seem to respawn over and over again. And again. And again. And again. It is clear that the programmers have tried to induce some kind of strategic element to the game, but the constant respawning of enemy units only severe to slowly deplete your own forces, as currency earned by defeating enemies is extremely low.

Each unit has their own strengths and weaknesses, but as the game is far too hard due to unbalanced gameplay, you'll end up just throwing the lot against a single enemy in an attempt to defeat them.

There are 7 (yes - you heard it) 7 missions per race, and you'll need the patience of a lama monk to see them all to the end.I only managed to finish the game with the marines - and get this - there was no ending and very little replay value.

AVP:Extinction fails to add something new to an already excellent franchise, and is overall a huge disappointment. It's an RTS without the RTS - it even makes the movie Alien resurrection seem good. A complete waste of time and money.
