I first saw this film when it was released in the cinema. I saw it during it's first week of release and hadn't really read much of the publicity about it. All I knew was that the first "Alien" movie had scared me half to death - and that was with only one Alien! We were now talking plural! ALIENS! As the cinema filled up, people were chatting and talking away, suddenly the lights dimmed and the film began. The feeling of dread and the awareness of there being lots of Aliens this time seemed to permeate the audience, and as the titles began, along with the creepy James Horner soundtrack, you could actually see everyone in the audience of this big London cinema physically shrinking down into their seats!
Yes it starts slowly, but when it does get going - wow. Hold on to your hats. James Cameron (the director) may be many things, but he is certainly a damn fine action director. He grabs hold of you and just won't let you go from there on. Some of the scenes in the darkened corridors with the bleeping movement sensors are almost too much to stand. The added 17 minutes of footage on these DVD's that were removed from the original cinema release add a lot to Ripley's character, and the scenes in the dark tunnels with the auto sentries will have you chewing your fist with suspense.
A fine fine film spoilt only by some of the extras on the bonus disc proving just how utterly humourless someone like Lance Henriksen is. Lancey-wancey seems to take himself just a tad too seriously. But acting like such a complete pr*tt makes him look stupid and made me laugh like a drain. Thanks Lance!
