4.0 out of 5 stars Great Album 21 Sep 2012
By Ricardo
Format:MP3 Download|Amazon Verified Purchase
I originally had this album on LP, the download version has the same tonal quality.
Aliens album has all the humour and musicianship you would expect from Thomas Dolby,
download comes with an additional track that did not feature on the original
(May the cube be with you) which sounds like a re-visit to his callaboration with
George Clinton of Paliament/Funkedelic days, its great to have, but this does not sound
like it belongs on this album to me, but being a purist I like to have my original albums
as they were intended so I'm probably a bit biased.
If you like humour with your electro-funk get this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thomas hits the US, and they almost won! 11 Jan 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
After 2 predominantly electronic albums Aliens was his third outing, and takes more from the funky side of things (continued on from Hyperactive). No pseudo-political rants here, although some clever/fun lyrics, and another cover version. Tom tried Latin flavours here perhaps a tad too much, and the band photos show this was definitely aimed at the US market.

I love Pulp Culture, and Airhead definitely has it's moments, whilst the full length Budapest By Blimp is an atmospheric classic that builds and builds. The bonus track (Dolbys Cube - the standard 12" mix) sits ok here, but is readily programmed out if you aren't in the mood for it!

Some great musicianship, just a little too glossy at times for my taste - definitely a 'producer's' album.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CD out of the top drawer 22 July 2002
Format:Audio CD
This is one of those rare albums that feels as fresh and groovy today as it did when it came out around 16 years ago. It's not necessary to analyse this album too much , considering that TD apparently wrote all the tunes in just a few hours so that the musicians he was auditioning would have something to play. This is a fun album with plenty of get-up-and-go and lots of funk. The production is warm, crisp and clear; so whacking the volume right up just adds to the listening pleasure. Stand out tracks for me are Key To Her Ferrari, The Ability To Swing, My Brain Is Like A Sieve and Budapest By Blimp. While the other tracks may not be quite so strong, they're still pretty damn good. It's very hard to liken Thomas Dolby to anyone else but he's certainly got bags of talent. If you've never heard anything by him, then this will be a great start. Having said that, I reckon this is as good as it gets with TD - its my favourite album of his by a long stretch.
