A different interpretation..., 1 Sep 2006
This review is from: In Alien Heat: The Warminster Mystery Revisited (Paperback)
I found this book a complete breath of fresh air! Having read much about the Warminster Mystery, (a local interest to me) I thought that what had been published before would remain the only investigations available. In Alien Heat is no rehash of old material - It invites you to take a fresh look at events surrounding the phenomena from a totally objective viewpoint. The authors' local knowledge and characters shine through with a welcome degree of humour when appropriate, but without detracting from the facts presented and their comments and thoughts. What I found particularly fascinating was the considerations on how British society viewed Shuttlewood and others publishings at the time. The book compels you to re-visit all the information and witness accounts some 30-40 years after it caused so much fuss in this small West Country market town. What a great mystery read!!

Reveals the foundations of British Ufology, 27 Feb 2007
This review is from: In Alien Heat: The Warminster Mystery Revisited (Paperback)
For those who really want to learn the 'truth' about UFOs this book is a must-read. British ufology was defined to a great extent by events at Warminster, but few people have taken the trouble to understand what it was really all about, the people driving the media coverage, and how easily the stories fitted in with contemporary culture. Not only is this an historical study, but it is relevant to modern-day reports, especially in areas widely reported as "UFO Focal Points" such as Bonnybridge in Scotland, the Derbyshire dales, and the Fylde coast. By reading this book, you will gain a better insight into the dynamics of British ufology. Buy it now!

Excellent book, 6 Aug 2009
This review is from: In Alien Heat: The Warminster Mystery Revisited (Paperback)
This book is both excellent and a little disappointing. Disappointing because I was introduced to UFOs through the works of Arthur Shuttlewood and the Warminster mystery. As a youngster these tales were evidence that something strange was happening over the skies of the UK which stimulated my interest in the subject. However as I grew older some of the tales seemed to be a little far fetched and this book has successfully highlighted some of those excesses. It does this in a very sensitive way and I think previous reviewers who complain that this almost attacks people who can't defend themselves miss the point of this book. The Warminster mystery played a pivotal role in the development of Ufology in the 60's and 70's so it is a valid subject for re-examination. This is true of many UFO issues as the passage of time leads to new information becoming available which helps shed some light on the subject. This can be seen in other books published about UFOs (for example one description in a book written by the UK's foremost UFO author which, when published, suggested an unearthly spectacle. Now with the benefit of a little research and date checking proves to be an early UK appearance of the F-117 stealth aircraft.) This book gently analyses what may have gone on and how the subsequent publicity ensured that the phenomenon ran away with the protagonists. For me the most telling description was the reproduction and subsequent analysis of the appearance of strange lights that morphed into an alien spacecraft "imitating" a military helicopter! The only problem I had with this book was that it glossed over the beginnings of the phenomenon. This may be due to the fact that once the UFO 'flap' began, the original issues were quickly forgotten. Despite this, this is an excellent read.
