Book Description

21 Mar 2010
-- This edition of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" presents the first translation into German of 1869 for the modern reader. The translation by Antonie Zimmermann was, in fact, the first translation of Alice into any language. It was originally published in a Fraktur typeface, and was written in a spelling typical of the nineteenth century. In preparing this edition, the spelling has been modernized with care and according to the rules of proven German orthography.

Personally I think the typeface, like the illustrations add ambiance to the book.
A paragraph from the back cover:
The Translation of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has always presented a special problem. The humor, popular children's verses, songs and especially the puns were thought at first to make it untranslatable. The problem was solved by Antonie Zimmermann with the-hearty approval of Carroll-by substituting popular German children's verses and puns for the English originals. "How Doth the Little Crocodile?" for instance, is turned into a parody of a German Romantic ballad. All in all, this is still the best of the 15 or more German Translations.
The Dover edition has held up well. Mine was printed in 1974 and has not started to yellow.

3.0 out of 5 stars Warning 3 Jan 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
If you are a person looking for a relatively easy German book to read, you might want to know that the book is in Old English print. If the reader is not used to the print, especially in German, it is a big headache to read. If you can get past the print, it is a good book. It's not very useful, however, if you are trying to learn German.

1.0 out of 5 stars Alice auf deutsch 28 Jan 2004
By "jamie_c" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Please be warned that this book is written in the old fashioned German script font and was very hard to read. It actually gave me such a head ache that I couldn't pick the book back up and never finished it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alice in German 14 May 2000
By Jamie Klein - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As a professor of German literature, I must declare that this book is an excellent translation of Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." A faithful version to the English is this translation. Carroll's wondrous verbal jokes and puns remain alive in German. Very recommended!
