From Amazon.co.uk

The marriage of director Tim Burton with the darker edges of the Alice In Wonderland story seems, on paper, to be an impressive match. And to a point, it is: Burton’s film explodes with colour and style, bringing a real sense of imagination to the classic Lewis Carroll stories. Alice In Wonderland isn’t perfect, though. It’s, at heart, far more conventional than you may be expecting, and the beefing up of the Mad Hatter’s role to accommodate the casting of Johnny Depp is problematic. That said, Depp’s performance is fine, even if it’s Helena Bonham-Carter who steals every scene she’s in. And Burton also wisely casts a strong supporting cast of British thespians, who don’t get enough screen time, but make the most of what they get. The end result, however, is a fun telling of an engaging story. And while Tim Burton’s take on Alice In Wonderland is far from the best filmed take on the source material, it’s nonetheless a solid family movie. It also looks stunning on Blu-ray. The colourful production design comes across wonderfully well, in vibrant 1080p, and the enveloping sound mix matches it too. And given how often the film is likely to be re-spun over the years, it’s easily the best way to own the film. --Jon Foster

4.0 out of 5 stars "Down with the bloody big head!" 8 July 2010
By @GeekZilla9000 TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Blu-ray
Alice in Wonderland is a familiar tale, it's been told many times and there are countless film adaptations (including the `fifties animated Disney film). Instead of retelling an already established story, Tim Burton has instead created a sequel of sorts where an older Alice revisits the place she recalls from a recurring dream.

When I heard that there was to be a new Alice in Wonderland film made I was doubtful that it could work, but when I read that Tim Burton was directing I knew it would be in safe hands - he is one of only a few directors I could imagine creating a world with the gothic, otherworldly appearance required. The result is a fresh look at well known characters in a different adventure, so Burton has the freedom to break from the original without upsetting purists - as long as he stays true to the characters of course.

The general look of the characters and their surroundings is both magical and whimsical, it resembles the illustrations I remember from my Lewis Carroll book while also looking new. It has the trademark Burton look and has the usual collaboration with Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and perhaps more essentially, Danny Elfman. The cast has been chosen with care, most characters are CGI and the voices behind them convey the various animals and people well.

The characters seem to be in keeping with both the original book and established idea of what the cast should be like through years of various re-tellings. The Hatter could perhaps have been darker, but the pseudo-schizophrenic mania and colourful look are enough to bring him to life. He's given a personal history too to give extra depth, there's also a great flashback to the original meeting of the young Alice with the tea party which marries the new story with the old.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.. 10 Jun 2010
By RJW TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
My expectations were high. Too high perhaps. That much is true. ..But as a fan of Tim Burton and someone who thoroughly enjoyed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I feel as though my expectations were justified.
The Tim Burton/Johnny Depp mixing pot is something that so consistently delivers quality cinema. Alice in Wonderland it seems though, is the exception to this rule.
The original book is of course enchanting, the yester-year Disney cinema offering is magical, but this new fangled all singing all dancing affair just doesn't cut it.
It's a big long gimmick really. The special effects are very good, that can't be denied by anyone - the boffins and geeks who were in-charge of the cgi deserve high praise indeed. And furthermore, the actors play their parts flawlessly. It's a well crafted movie, expertly put together by a veteran film maker.
But it lacks any real magic. It's just TOO polished. Too slick, too perfect, too shiny. It has no character, no depth, no soul. And much like so many recent modern movies, it feels like a technical exercise rather than a piece of story telling.

In summary, this is not for me. It's sugar-coated entertainment for the masses. This type of film-making clearly has an audience, but sadly I'm not part of it. I prefer my cinema with a few less bells and whistles.

Once again Tim Burton does a fine job of creating a fine fantasy world, into which a charming Alice (Mia Wasikowska, who more recently impressed me as Jane Eyre) is plunged when she falls down a rabbit hole. What follows is a bizarre set of adventures, inspired by rather than based on Lewis Carroll's works.

With a host of well known faces and voices, Burton's typically twisted and dark vision and some really very funny moments, this is an entertaining film that really helps pass the time. Johnny Depp provides one of his better performances of recent years, and Helena Bonham Carter is memorable as the Red Queen, especially in her final scenes. I rather enjoyed it, 4 stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Plop by Numbers 5 May 2010
By Dr. Delvis Memphistopheles TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Abysmal, tedious, mindless, soporific plot driven drivel, hidden by smoke, mirrors and special effects called CGI. Some semblance of acting but even this was derivative. It was nowhere near enough to save this from sinking faster than a colander masquerading as a lifeboat. Drifting off with boredom into my own wonderland, I forced the shutters open with incredulity.

The books (Alice, Through the Looking Glass) weave magic because Charles conjured other worlds. This film script was written by a delegated public school pajama party. Loosely based on Carrol, reworked in American Disney studio. The result it is 3D minus a plot. Perhaps the film should have been about who stole the plot In this binary Jack and Jill world, the baddies are malformed and odious. The goodies are good looking and nice. Just like in real life...children.

The scriptwriters did a detour around Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen to sieve out any nasty gremlins because the little people dooooonttttt liiiiike itttttt. It will frighten the poor little things watching such nastiness. I mean of course the parents. Incorporated within the 100 plus mins are the twist and turns of plot deviation of a Sunday driver caressing the outward curves of a long distance motorway. They used to play something similar on German TV to help insomniacs to get to sleep. This is in desperate need of a roundabout to swing its hat to, otherwise Pfizer and Roche, watch out! The Mad hatter finds his rationale for living when the red queen forces him to make, errr, hats. For some reason we the viewers are meant to see this as exploitative, boo hiss. (In real life in the "mental" health field, if someone returns to a positive lifestyle, ie rediscovers a skill, this is seen as worth applauding, not castigating).
