4.0 out of 5 stars More surreal..... 20 April 2002
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
I remember watching this version on TV a few years ago. It is more surreal than the Disney version of Lewis Carroll's books, especially as Alice's hair changes through each scene, and some scenes that are ment to be set in a wood seem to be in white room. The flowers are played by women who wear floral dresses. However, it keeps closer to the story line then the cartoon versions and the effects are good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie 7 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
This is a fabulous movie. I was kind of confused whether this film was meant for adults or children, but I'm sure both would enjoy it. I'm American so unfortunatly I cannot purchase this on video yet, I just happened to catch it on HBO this afternoon. But it's a great film with a great cast and it is definatly worth a look. So if you have the money buy or rent it and I am sure you will enjoy it. There is humor and adeventure throughout the movie so it shouldn't be missed. Hope you enjoy!

Not many versions of Lewis Carroll’s classic masterwork ‘Alice through the looking glass (and what she found there)’ have been transcribed to film and pretty much all of the adaptations seriously fall short of what the allegories in the story are all about and so they seriously disappoint. Not THIS version. This (for me) is the BEST version of the classic tale I have ever seen.

‘Alice through the looking glass (and what she FOUND there)’ is the second book that Lewis Carroll wrote for Alice Liddell so as to deliver messages hidden in plain sight in a fabulously delightful way – this time lessons on BEHAVIOUR and what to watch out for as Alice treads the chessboard of life in a mirrored world filled with good and evil – and how to spot danger and have the sense and fortitude to overcome it.

What Alice FOUND there was a book, and in the book is a poem - ‘The Jabberwocky’.

Aside from the wonderful sounds captured in the words of the poem when the poem is recited out loud (which is essential to maximise the pleasure of the piece), there are many Anglo Saxon words within the poem that Alice does not understand and so she cannot decipher its meaning – words such as toves, borogroves, mome raths, frumious, bandersnatch, outgrabe, uffish, whiffling, tulgey, burbled, frabjous, and (the biggy) jabberwocky - which prompts Alice to ask Humpty Dumpty what the words mean – only to discover that Humpty Dumpty is a pompous idiot who informs Alice that words mean exactly what HE says they mean – neither more nor less – now there’s a good knock-down argument for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Disney 27 May 2013

A super version of the less well known Alice story. Excellant acting and stuffed full of well known actors and actress'. A real challenge to put this story into a film version and I am so glad someone did as it has paid off. I recommend reading the story first though as it might be confusing otherwise especially if all you know is wonderland.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best adaptations 23 Aug 2011
By bishka
Format:DVD
Although this film shows its age in places, it is one of the few that realy does try to capture the essence of the book. With such a strong cast and perfomences, it could hardly go wrong. Alice is older in this film than in the book, but that is easy to forgive as I'm sure a younger actress could not give the performence that Kate Beckinsale gave....Well worth watching and a real must for any Alice fan or collector.
