Product Description

With haunting prose and deft psychological insight, Averil Dean spins a chilling story that explores the dark corners of obsession—love, pain, and revenge.

Ten years ago, someone ruined Alice Croft’s life. Now, she has a chance to right that wrong—and she thinks she’s found the perfect man to carry out her plan.

After watching him for weeks, she breaks into Jack Calabrese’s house to collect the evidence that will confirm her hopes. When Jack comes home unexpectedly, Alice hides in the closet, fearing for her life. But upon finding her, Jack is strangely calm, solicitous…and intrigued.

That night is the start of a dark and intense attraction, and soon Alice finds herself drawn into a labyrinth of terrifying surrender to a man who is more dangerous than she could have ever imagined. As their relationship spirals toward a breaking point, Alice starts to see just how deep Jack’s secrets run—and how deadly they could be.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too sexual 16 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It was really sexual, which I didn't expect and I got a bit fed up with it, page after page.

3.0 out of 5 stars I quite enjoyed it - but...... 5 Feb 2014

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
.......I found it quite disjointed, wasn't always clear if it was a past memory being described or the present day. Without giving too much away it was quite a sad ending but I understood it. What I didn't understand was what the connection was between Ray (a step-father figure) and Jack, maybe I missed something but the two characters as far as I could see didn't have any connection prior to when Alice "introduced" them? I was expecting them to have been in each others past and was waiting for that to come out and never did.

4.0 out of 5 stars sad but intriguing 27 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Alice is a sad, broken character; raised in the care system and losing her mother at a young age. She might be a successful writer, but emotionally she is stuck at the age of ten. She gets involved with Jack, after breaking into his home and getting caught. Jack is just as damaged as Alice. Together their relationship is quite poignant and sad.

This is such a bleak novel, full of misunderstandings and people who can only communicate through sex. I wanted to like Alice more, but after she killed the dog I just couldn't. I found the self harming realistic and it just emphasised how Alice was quite alone and hurting. A lovely dark read, that just has a little bit much too sexual content.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart Thumping Pace 2 Jan 2014
By Donna D. Everhart - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I loved this book, plain and simple. I read it like I was eating a wonderful, scrumptious dessert.

Averil Dean is a master at digging around in the psyche of her characters, exploring why they do what they do, and making you wonder, if they'll do that, what will they do next? And that is only one reason why this is a page turner. From the very first sentence, "I am inside Jack's house." to the last, I simply couldn't wait to see what happened next. As I got closer and closer to the end, I began to try and slow down. I didn't want this book to end!

I loved how this author inter-weaved Alice Croft's back story. She was subtle, and popped the information in about her childhood at the right moments, and because I love coming of age stories anyway, all of these pages when Alice was younger, stood just as strongly, and held me captivated just as much as the older Alice. And by using this technique, you understood what made Alice tick, why she was such a good match for Jack the beginning.

But then, things begin to slowly unravel, coming apart insidiously, in such a creepy way, you start to worry, what will he do? What will she do?. All I can say is, this book got my heart rate up, like a movie that puts you on the edge of your seat.

I can't wait for Averil Dean's next book. She is a skilled writer, and her blistering prose and keen sense of how to tell a story, and tell it well, will not leave you disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark. Disturbing. Captivating. 16 Jan 2014
By Maryellen - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
If I didn't know better I'd swear that Gillian Flynn (GONE GIRL) and E.L. James (FIFTY SHADES OF GREY) got together, had a few drinks and decided to write a book. If you're a fan of dark and unlikable characters that have a lot of unconventional (okay downright violent) sex, then this psychological thriller bordering on erotica book is for you.

Alice Croft is one of the most complex characters that I have ever read. She got under my skin. You want to pity her; but she makes it hard. You want to hate her; but then you feel that twinge of pity. You want to choke the life out of her; but then you remember that she's a character in a book and why in the world are you so invested in this damaged character anyway?

Alice is a twenty year old woman who writes YA books. She's successful at it. This is amazing considering the life that she’s had to endure. Alice wants revenge for the wrongs in her life. Jack Calabrese doesn't know it yet, but he's part of her plan to exact that revenge. Alice has been stalking Jack for weeks. She likes breaking into people's houses. She doesn't want anything valuable. She just wants to know things. What she doesn't expect is for Jack to come home and find her in his closet. He should be calling the police. He should be doing anything other than what he does.

Both Alice and Jack have their secrets and chapter by chapter, page by page, those secrets are revealed to the climax of this story's dirty and convoluted ending. This disturbing book made me cringe in pain in parts. It infuriated me (I love animals~~it was really hard to read such a dark part of the book). It captivated me. I needed to know the end. I needed a resolution to all of the mess that had been made. And in the end, I'm not sure that there is a possible resolution.

ALICE CLOSE YOUR EYES is Author Averil Dean's debut novel. Where in the world will she go from here? Please take time to read the very candid and insightful Reader's Guide and the Authors Q&A in the back of the book. Congratulations to this author for overcoming her own setbacks and getting this novel published.

I won an ARC of this book from Shelf Awareness. The opinions above are my own.

3.0 out of 5 stars One of those Hard to Describe Books that You will find Odd but won't be able to put it down 10 Jan 2014
By Paula L. Phillips - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
Wanting a novel that in a way reminds the reader of the author Jennifer McMahon ? A novel that will have you sucked in but at the same time , the book will have you questioning why on earth are you still reading it ? This was one of the weirdest books I have read in a long time. Judging by the cover , I thought this book would be a psychological thriller and in a way it was but then again, it wasn't. In Alice, Close Your Eyes we meet Alice Croft - she is a reclusive author who in her spare time, stalks guys and then breaks into their houses to discover the strange and what others would call mundane. She steals their sentimental objects, things that to people outside of them would be seen as nothing major or important. She also cuts herself with razor blades to relieve pain and I guess also as a punishment for her kleptomania. She has never been caught until now and the guy Jack will not let her simply leave and walk out of his life. As the novel goes on , there is lots of sex scenes and quite graphic ones and it seems that Jack and Alice are friends but not friends , with benefits. We also discover that Alice has had a rough life and for ten years she has been searching for someone who can help her kill the man , the reason she has not been able to close her eyes and sleep at night. Has Alice finally found a guy who will kill for her ? This novel also shows us that often what we think we experienced as a child , can not nessecarily be the exact true events of what really happened and that when the incidents or actions are closer to us, more often than not we have a skewed view of what is fact and what is fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars This story will take you into deep places you may not have suspected you would go 3 Jan 2014

Averil Dean is a gifted writer whose prose at times touches on a brilliance that may give you goosebumps or take your breath away. She writes unflinchingly of truths many readers perhaps would not expect in such a book, and she does it in such a way that her love and respect for her characters and her craft and her readers cannot help but be apparent. ALICE CLOSE YOUR EYES has flaws, so I give it four stars instead of five, but it's likely they are flaws only a very picky reader such as myself would see; and in any case, they do not keep me from wholeheartedly recommending this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Open your eyes and read 15 Jan 2014
By Chris Rice - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
Alice is a sexy read with a solid sense of place and a compelling story to tell. Dean has a lulling prose style that is both graphic and descriptively lush, deftly pulling the reader into the mind of a woman losing control of her man and her questionable motives.
