The critically acclaimed show owed a debt to Buffy the Vampire Slayer for its mix of action, romance, mystery, and moral quandaries, but in this series Alias truly came into its own--with a climax that came as a total shocker and prepped the show for an emotionally volatile third series. Guest stars included the phenomenal Amy Irving as Sloane's wife, Faye Dunaway as a nefarious bigwig, Christian Slater as a kidnapped scientist, and Ethan Hawke as a fellow CIA agent (or rather, two of them), but it was the dysfunctional nuclear family of Syd, Irina, and father Jack (Victor Garber) that gave Alias its heart and its strength, whether the three perfectly cast actors (all Emmy nominated) were just bickering or undertaking deadly hand-to-hand combat. --Mark Englehart
You won't be disappointed if you purchase this. I guarantee it.
It is a bad idea to try watch Season 2 without having first seen the first year - although on its own it is outstanding, you need to have followed the story right from its inception.
In Alias Season 2, Jennifer Garner's character Sydney Bristow continues the dangerous task of bringing down SD-6, the rogue espionage group headed up by Arvin Sloane (played by the genius Ron Rifkin). This year she has far more to deal with, primarily stemming from the re-emergence of her ex-KGB agent mother, Irina Derevko (Lena Olin). The family unit formed of Sydney, Irina and Sydney's father Jack is one of the most compelling onscreen families ever.
Season 2 continues the Rambaldi mythological plotines from the previous year, and it is as action-packed as before.
The quality of the show doesn't drop - it rises. The acting is, as ever, top notch from all players, the writing is excellent and each episode is staged and shot like a polished movie. The various plots running through the year progress at breakneck pace, and it doesn't let up until the credits at the end of the astounding finale.
The show's creator JJ Abrams daringly redefined the show halfway through this season.
Although the third series of Alias hasn't been as excellent, the first two years of the show serve to show the meaning of Perfect TV.
