Amazon.co.uk Review

By the time Ali G--the inspired creation of comedian Sacha Baron Cohen who debuted on the lame satirical series The 11 O'Clock Show--first got his own series, the gangsta rapper from Berkshire was already one of the biggest things on TV. Ali G--Aiiii is a compilation of the best bits from his own series, Da Ali G Show. Part chat show (Paul Daniels makes a memorably awful appearance; Gail Porter turns up and Ali dims the house lights and gets all soppy), and part saucy variety show (Ali's duet with Jarvis Cocker is fun, but no-where near as good as his improvised rap with Mohammed Al Fayed "from Arrods"), the material here is richer and more varied than his 11 O'Clock appearances, which more or less depended on his interviewees not knowing he was stitching them up. At various points, Ali reports from the States--the Staines rapper's spiritual home, you suspect--and the bemused reactions of the unsuspecting people he meets there makes for some of the video's funniest moments ("Has anyone ever been killed by a gun?" he asks someone from the National Rifle Association).

Ali G--Aiii also features Cohen's newest character Borat, a reporter from Kazakhstani television who is producing a guide to Britain for his viewers back home. Amazingly, Cohen ran into trouble with the Kazakhstani embassy in Britain over his portrait of the bumbling reporter with only the faintest grasp of English, but in fact it's the Brits he interviews who patronise Borat who come off a lot worse. (See, for example, the embarrassed silence which greets Borat's attempt at introductory small talk at a society dinner party: "My wife, she is dead"!) Like the rest of the show, there is a smart satiric edge to the comedy but it's also very, very funny. Ali introduces the compilation, keepin' it real with a promise that profits from the sale of the video will be channelled back into the Staines ghetto. --Edward Lawrenson

5.0 out of 5 stars the best from the series where the popularity soared......, 7 Oct 2003
Ali's rise from a slot on the 11 o'clock show rapidly changed when he got his own show. The variety of the character of Ali G became more diverse. In stayed the interviews (of course) and joining them came musical duets (jarvis cocker, mohammed al fayed), focus groups (featuring hilarious debates on politics, animals etc) and the new character Borat.

Interviews are definately Ali's strong point and is emphasised by questions to Gail Porter such as 'me heard you got a HND.....have you been to the clinic to check it out?'. This preceedes Ali singing 'every breath you take' into Gail's eyes (unmissable comedy!).

The new bits are fantastic too, Ali shows concern for children getting into drugs "the most worrying thing about drugs is that it actually makes you like house music!" This follows his respect for animals and ideas for future politics ; "do you think in five years animals will be able to vote?"

The video is a fine collection of the Da Ali G show and has a few extra bits that werent shown on tv. All in all definately worth getting , especially if you like his previous video 'innit'!

4.0 out of 5 stars So.... good comedy does still exist., 3 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This has bettered Ali's first video. He is even sharper here than before.

The only criticism is the dire studio sketches and studio interviews which the guests come on only to boost their already self-obsessed personalities(Mohamed Al Fayed, Paul Daniels, Gail Porter) ... all the directly scripted bits are awful.

Cohen becomes a comedy giant only when he is improvising - best shown with his hilarious 'Borat' character and Ali interviews (FBI, Wildlife and Drugs just couldn't have been pulled off any better).

4.0 out of 5 stars Ali G's Volume II, 19 Nov 2000
This review is from: Ali G - Aiii [DVD] [2000] (DVD)
Why when they release Ali on video do they insist on giving him such poorly scripted introductions? Apart from the staged sketches on the show (interviews with Paul Daniels etc) The video is very funny, Borat is especially a star of the show! The video concludes with outakes (not many) and an ALL NEW Ali G character! (make sure you let the video roll @ the end!
