I have recently purchased a copy of your study mates book 'Understanding Maths' and just want to say thank you, it has really helped me. In fact, i wish i could have got a copy 20 years ago. great book from a great author. Look out for his Understanding maths, Understanding the numbers and Back to the black books. Really clear, well written, another reviewer has said 'Graham Lawler you are a hero', perhaps a little over the top but this author can communicate ideas v well. I now understand things that I did not previously understand and that is the point and that is his strength as a writer and teacher. Ideal for older people like me who need to understand basic maths. --amazon.co.uk

This book is a great informal way to 'dip' into algebra if you are thinking of revisiting maths after a long hiatus. I used it as a 'warm-up' before starting my OU A level and found it very insightful. HOWEVER, as the previous reviewer stated, there ARE several mistakes some of which I found in the straight-line graph section, this isn't really justifiable but, alas, it does happen when authors are meeting tight publishing deadlines. However, Mr Lawler on the whole writes clearly and concisely and is obviously a very talented Mathematician; I especially enjoyed his section covering bisections and iterations. It is a fascinating taster of Higher mathematics which will no doubt prove accessible for those daunted at the prospect of studying at this level.
