Review

Wanderlust Magazine: You've got to applaud Marco Polo's chutzpah to launch 30 new city/island guidebooks into an already pretty crowded market. Aiming to occupy the middle ground between the context-heavy luggage fillers and the context-free thinner volumes, the main USPs of these user-friendly guides are the plentiful 'Insider tips' dotted around each edition, the maps they're packaged with, and the pocket cheering price (GBP5.99 each). Complete with near-magazine style features, they're certainly a less intimidating proposition than some of the big wedges on offer. --Various

3.0 out of 5 stars More than Adequate 26 Oct. 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Having borrowed three books on the Algrave from the library, I found this one purchased from Amazon was the one that we ended up taking with us for a week. Why? It was small enough to fit in a pocket, and yet contained more information than competitor pocket books. The map, was fine for travelling around by train, in that we could see which towns were on the railway line and get a good view on whether the station was in the town or away from the town.

The sections on the various towns were sufficent to help decide which towns to visit. The town maps were helpful, although they tended to cover the centre, which did not always include the railway station, and so not helping us to navigate from station into town and vice-versa.

Yes there are better guide books, but they are much bigger and heavier. For a reasonably compact book that fits in the pocket, I doubt if there is a better one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Written by someone who's never left the office 22 Oct. 2012
Format:Paperback
As someone who goes abroad quite a lot, I've read a lot of travel guides and books. This one was really pretty poor.
The maps were neither big enough to provide an overview or detailed enough to be useful on the ground, and they managed to leave off the "highlights" mentioned in the text whilst focusing on nothing really important. The text mentioned places and landmarks not noted on any of the maps, and the map symbols in the text didn't seem to relate to anything. The places of note were in general not tremendously interesting (pointing out that there is another town with nothing in it nearby does not count as a point of interest for me).
The phrases at the back are those sort of old-fashioned ones that look good in a text book but are actually not the sort of things that you really want to know how to say, when you are on the ground, and were poorly explained (does the "m/f" refer to the speaker, or the person you're speaking to, or some other criteria??).
A few key companies - hotels, restaurants, excursions - were picked out for highlight, but although they were going for that "lonely planet - I genuinely visited these places" vibe, it just came across as underhand advertising.
Overall, there was just not enough information on anything, poorly put together, and a lot of words wasted on things that didn't need them.

4.0 out of 5 stars good basic knowledge 24 Sept. 2012
By Jo A
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this for a short holiday to the Algarve and it contained all the basic info that one would need. There are special highlights indicated for particularly nice places and the fold out map was a helpful addition showing these places as well. The restaurant tips were true to their the recommendations ie the food was good. The only problem was that there are not many restaurants listed for each area.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value. 30 Aug. 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Bought two of these guides, one for Algarve and one for Lanzarote. Very pleased as the level of detail is far better than most and the guides include useful pull out maps as well as city guides. Don't expect too much detail as you can't cover everything in a small book. Great starting point though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value for money 17 Aug. 2013
Format:Paperback
It is a good pocket size but there is still plenty of information on accommodation, food and drink, sightseeing, shopping and entertainment. It has also an excellent map. It's well worth the money.
