4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations 15 Feb. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a short e book that tells you about the Almond tree. It starts with a beautiful painting by the author of this beautiful tree on the front cover. Indeed I think one of the most appealing things about this little book are the lovely illustrations.

The first part talks about the harvesting of the nuts in the Algarve which takes place in September and October. It sounds a most atmospheric and interesting harvest and I would love to try an almond picked straight from the tree.

We then read about the different things that can be done with this almond harvest from using them in recipes to making oils. Two oils are created from almonds the sweet almond oil is an essential oil used in aromatherapy while the oil from the bitter almond is used in cooking.

If you read this you will learn about the legend of the almond tree in the Algarve.

I want to try some of the recipes such as the almond tart.

Apart from cooking almond oil is beneficial in your beauty regime and is excellent for your hair and your skin. It is also medicinal as almonds help with digestion and help with your immune system.

This is a great little book full of inspiring gems and lovely illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Almond Tree 31 Jan. 2014

I loved this book, it is so informative, I read twice and will read it again for there is so much information in here. As the Author says we all have a superficial knowledge of almonds and that they are now being used for so many things, but I for one didn't know that there was more than one type of almond oil. I will definitely try it on my skin and the culinary variety in cooking and salads. The cover illustration is lovely, I have been to the Algarve at this time of the year and it is as the author says, a snow scene of blossom. Very evocative. Also visitors usually buy the marizipan sweets but how many know of the different varieties and their origins. I would definitly recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but Strange 25 Nov. 2014

Frankly, I had a hard time figuring out the goal of the author; it seemed to be a hodge-podge of assorted facts and myth about the almond tree. The information about the benefits of almond, almond oil, bitter almond, etc., consumption was interesting.

Learning that the Moors brought the almond trees to Portugal was interesting. But the descriptions of desserts one might find in Portuguese stalls seemed to be padding.

This is one of several eBooks about Algarve.
