3.0 out of 5 stars Great book. Terrible CD 6 April 2013
By Vari
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a great book for anyone wanting to play piano again, especially if like me you had some piano lessons as a child. It refreshed my memory of the theory involved, and very quickly enabled me to play some music again. However, the CD is absolutely terrible, as it is played on a very cheap sounding synth. It is impossible to make out the individual notes, and there is a synth drum accompanying the music also, which just adds to the general fuzz. If you think you would need a CD to help you, then don't buy this. The book itself is great though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Re-learning the piano can be fun. 6 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Received this just before Christmas, and already up to page 30. This is a fun and instructive way to learn, or in my case re-learn, the piano. The included CD helps with being able to hear the pieces and better judge your pacing (beat of the music). Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Fun! 1 Feb 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm yet another one of those people who had lessons as a child, but now wish to pick up where they left off. On a personal note, when I had lessons (for a few years, with three different teachers), they had no idea what to do with me since I'm visually impaired and couldn't see the music, and I never really got past 'When The Saints' level. Now I am older and know how to set things up MY way, surprise surprise I'm doing much better than I thought was possible. Proof that having a teacher definitely isn't everything. (for me at least!)

An interesting thing I noticed when comparing the different versions of this book was that the main gripes were to do with the CD. either the book didn't come with one, or it did, but was terrible quality. As I think another reviewer has mentioned, do yourself a favour and look on YouTube. You might get the odd person playing the wrong tempo but on the hole I find it really useful if your playing a song you don't know.

Some of the songs in the book are very cheesy which some people don't seem to like, but for me the silliness just makes it all the more fun! I know we all have hugely complicated pieces we'd love to play straight away, but we all have to start somewhere, and if that means playing things like 'Mexican Hat Dance' then so be it! ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent piano tutor 18 Nov 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As an adult learner I wanted something more interesting than the 1950's tutor I had previously tried using. This introduces playing more than one note, per hand, at an early stage and the author treats the student as an adult. This is rarely the case with instrument tutors. Highly recommended.

I ordered this for a friends birthday and thank goodness it arrived today just in time. Can't really comment on the contents as I am no piano player. It looks good though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Alfreds self teaching piano course
The book was good but the cd is useless would have been nice if it had been played on piano and not on a tinny synth. All in all quite expensive for what you got.
