Product Description

About the Author

The photographer: Alfred Wertheimer was born in Germany in 1929, came to America and settled in Brooklyn as a young boy. He took an early interest in architecture and design, which led him to Cooper Union, from which he graduated in 1951. In the spring of 1956, a series of commercial assignments for RCA Records led to a shoot of a newly signed singer named Elvis Presley. Instantly impressed, Wertheimer devoted four months of his own time to intensely shadow the young star. The result would be the most intimate and candid look at the future legend ever recorded. The contributing authors: Chris Murray has organized over 200 exhibitions of many of the leading artists of our time, from Andy Warhol in the 1970s to Annie Leibovitz's first exhibition in 1984. He is co-curator of the Smithsonian Institution's exhibition" Elvis at 21" and is the author or editor of over a dozen books. Robert Santelli is the executive director of the Grammy Museum and former CEO/artistic director of the Experience Music Project. He is the author of nearly a dozen books and a contributor to magazines such as "Rolling Stone."

I bought this book expecting something really special for the money. The book is very "BIG" but the pictures have lost clarity and are a bit hazy. The book "Elvis - A king in the Making" is only £25 and contains 95% of the photos in much better quality so if you are thinking of buying this book please save you money n as you will be very disappointed.

McCartney said Elvis is the Messiah. So this book is the Bible. It is great. it is large. With Hundreds of beautiful pics. Elvis deserves something like that. Thanks Taschen. Thanks God.

This book is not just a book. It is a work of art. Very nicely put together.
The only surprise was that several of the sections of print are in 3 languages. English, then below that is German and below that is French. Still very nicely done, but it was a surprise.
When first glancing through it, I felt transported back in time.
This is a must for the person that really appreciates Elvis and his role and contribution to the Birth of Rock and Roll.

Is It Worth It? 11 May 2013
By Texbro - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I have the same question as the previous reviewer. However see the Books section of the Saturday May 11 issue of Wall Street Journal for a review. It does not look like this will be a rehash of what we've seen before.
