From the Author
At this time, I just want to point out that the book (UK edition) contains a separate analytical essay on EVERY Hitchcock-directed film (except for the German version of MURDER!, called MARY), which is more than any other English-language book on Hitchcock. And each essay contains something new and original. When writing the book, I made that a rule!
In addition, there are essays by notable authors like Dan Auiler ('Hitchcock's Notebooks') on Hitchcock's life and career, Steven DeRosa ('Writing With Hitchcock') on Hitchcock and his writers, Martin Grams Jr ('The Alfred Hitchcock Presents Companion') on Hitchcock's TV and radio work and the published Hitchcock anthologies; and so on.
Finally, I must say that the book has been influential. Several forthcoming books on Hitchcock pay it tribute. Even Professor Peter Conrad ('The Hitchcock Murders'), who pours scorn on most published academic work on Hitchcock, tells me that he read and enjoyed 'The Alfred Hitchcock Story'. My point in the book about the famous MacGuffin - that it recalls T.S. Eliot's notion of the 'meaning' of a poem which is like the bone thrown by a burglar to distract the watchdog of the mind while the poem or film goes about its real business - is repeated in Professor Conrad's book.
Do think of buying 'The Alfred Hitchcock Story'!
