Most of Hitchcock's British films, and a few extras 24 Aug 2011

This DVD set is mostly a collection of the master director's early British films. None of his more famous US films are in the set. Also, two TV shows are in the collection, but they are not among the 17 episodes that Hitchcock directed. The IMDB rating is given, then the year, then the movie name.

----------- SILENTS! -------------------
7.3 - 1927 - The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog
6.3 - 1927 - The Ring
6.2 - 1928 - The Farmer's Wife
5.8 - 1928 - Easy Virtue
5.9 - 1928 - Champagne
6.4 - 1929 - The Manxman
----------- TALKIES -------------------
7.0 - 1929 - Blackmail
4.8 - 1930 - Juno and the Paycock (aka The Shame of Mary Boyle)
5.9 - 1931 - The Skin Game
6.0 - 1931 - Rich and Strange (aka East of Shanghai)
5.9 - 1932 - Number Seventeen (aka Number 17 in U.S.)
6.9 - 1934 - The Man Who Knew Too Much
8.0 - 1935 - The 39 Steps
6.7 - 1936 - Secret Agent
7.1 - 1936 - Sabotage (aka I Married a Murderer)
7.1 - 1937 - Young and Innocent (aka The Girl Was Young)
8.1 - 1938 - The Lady Vanishes
6.3 - 1939 - Jamaica Inn
------ ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS ------
7.2 - The Cheney Vase
7.7 - The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Also, there is a 39 minute collection of movie trailers, and a 22 minute documentary with an unnamed person discussing some well-known facts about Hitchcock, interspersed with 4 very long clips from the movies above. Don't get this for the documentary.

I'd already seen half of these films, and most of his US films, and much of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, so I got this set mainly to be a completist. Many of these early films were shot on a very low budget, but I still found them engaging.

You Can't Beat the Price... 31 Jan 2012
By markus king - Published on Amazon.com
It should be noted this "Legacy of Suspense" set comes from Mill Creek, who also issued the nearly identical "The Legend Begins" box set a few years earlier. Surprisingly, this set is actually an improvement on the previous one.

The picture quality is still roughly the same. Bear in mind these films are not only very old but they're in public domain. But for the most part they're very watchable.

I tested the discs and found no defects in any of them- they all played without difficulty.

The films included are all found on the prior collection, as are the two episodes of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents". The bonus trailers are also here (nearly 40 minutes worth!). This collection also has a little documentary hosted by an older, sedate gentleman who rattles off some facts about Hitchcock, interspersed with clips from films included here (The Lodger, The Lady Vanishes, etc). It's nice but NOT essential.

While better prints of some of the films are available on other collections, some are not. And the collections that do have them are CONSIDERABLY higher-priced.

Overall, this is a great value.
