Book Description

A car mechanic turned internationally acclaimed opera star, Alfie Boe has taken Broadway by storm, conquered the West End and has won the hearts of the nation.
The first official bad boy of opera, this is the story of his life - the ups and the downs, from finding fame to losing his father - and of his love affair with music.
A story not typical of most musical stars, Alfie's dreams of singing only became a reality when fate intervened in the form of a stranger: he was training as a car mechanic when a customer overheard him singing and told him about a London audition. Alfie tried out, got the part and has never looked back.
Celebrated worldwide and lauded by Baz Luhrman and Cameron Mackintosh as the best tenor we've produced in a generation, for the first time, he will grant his millions of fans an intimate glimpse into the life of the man they adore.

Review

He s made it on talent, grit and determination, rather than let the establishment grind him down. He s remained his own man and a natural born entertainer...The break which changed his life came when a TVR customer urged him to audition with London s D Oyly Carte. At 19, he turned up in lumberjack shirt, jeans, boots, looked at the posh suits and ball gowns, thought I don t fit in here. And then proved why he did. The rest, as they say, is history. His story. And it s there to be read... --Bringing it Home , Feature, The Blackpool Gazette

Alfie Boe, the blokish tenor, was never a car mechanic. He once sprayed the undersides of TVRs black in Blackpool that s all. The Lancashire lad is keen to set the record straight in Alfie, a magnificent story...The chapter on his father s death is very moving --Hot Type: Celebrity Memoirs, The Telegraph

Alfie Boe is one of the world s most popular opera stars, and this autobiography tells how he first found fame...This is a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse of the man lauded as he best tenor Britain s produced in a generation --Candis

5.0 out of 5 stars A roller coaster. 3 Sept. 2012
By jp.rev
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
First, I must admit i am a big fan of Alfie Boe, so came to this book with a few stars in my eyes. after reading it I have a new repect for this highly talented man.
The fist chapter, is no gentle introduction, but a rather shocking telling of his awful experience while performing 'The pearl Fishers' for ENO, 2010. An time when he seriously considered giving up his struggle for recognition, and stop singing. Thankfully things did turn round, and he became the star we know today.
His story takes us from his birth and early days in Fleetwood. the youngest of nine children. The huge influence of his music loving father,Through the roller coaster up and downs of trying to make it in the world of Opera. And finally, literally finding his own voice, through his huge success in 'Les Miserable'.
Alfie has opened his heart, in this book, telling of very personal and moving times in his life, and lifting the lid,on the establishment of Opera, ruffling feathers and earning himself the name of 'bad boy of Opera'. A name I think he quite enjoys.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real page turner 19 Sept. 2012
By DD
Format:Hardcover
I received my copy of Alfie..My Story at noon and had read it by teatime...I just couldn't put it down! Alfie is a humble and modest man who loves his family and is loyal to his friends, but life has not always been easy. The book reads as if you are sitting with him having a chat over a pint, and is full of anecdotes and recollections of various sometimes funny and sometimes extremely poignant episodes in his life. I have loved his music for some time and have seen him perform in Les Mis as well as his own concerts...a consummate performer with a beautiful voice, and lovely personality to go with it. Enjoy the book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Have a chin-wag with Alfie 8 Sept. 2012
Format:Hardcover
"Bizet nearly killed me" is the striking opening sentence of this engaging autobiography written by English tenor, Alfie Boe, beginning just one of the many amusing and sometimes, moving, stories of Alfie's life so far, told as he traces his journey from his humble beginnings in Fleetwood, England, to fame on the world singing stage. Alfie's story is, like any life, a story of ups and downs, although many will be surprised at just how grim some aspects of Alfie's journey have been. From being bossed around by the toffs at the Royal Opera House, to sleeping on a li-lo in a corridor in New York, life has not always been a bed of roses for England's favourite tenor. Amusing also, are the stories from behind the scenes of performances gone wrong, relationships established and challenges overcome.
Alfie has bravely shared some of the most poignant episodes of his life, from the loss of his father, to falling in love, the birth of his children and to finally establishing himself as a singing sensation admired throughout the world. One of the book's major achievements, however, is that Alfie's voice, even filtered through ghost writer, Alex Godfrey, remains authentically his, in tone, syntax and semantics. Reading this book makes you feel as if you have just had a visit from Alfie Boe. Sit down, have a cuppa, and enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Alfie" My life story 5 Oct. 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Alfie: My Story
This was bought as a present for my friend who was staying with me for a few days, she had recently become an admirer of his music.
Well all I can say is she wouldn't put the bloomin' thing down and all I heard from her for hours were giggles, oh dears, well I nevers, did you knows, and full blown belly laughs. She really enjoyed it and she isn't a person who is easily pleased by any old book. She says, even to anyone who doesn't really know Alfie Boe, it would be a great read, so I for one will be borrowing it soon (:

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book by a genuinely nice bloke. 19 Sept. 2012
By Sheila Camp VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover
This is a lovely book and Alfie comes across as a genuinely nice bloke. Having seen interviews with him and heard how "ordinary" (for want of a better word) he talks, you can here him when you read this book.

As Australianarrow says "Reading this book makes you feel as if you have just had a visit from Alfie Boe. Sit down, have a cuppa, and enjoy it". This sums up my thoughts exactly.

Some great photos in the book too right from when he is a youngster. Lovely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Autobiography 26 Oct. 2012
By Mr. G. Johns VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
It was thanks to Classic FM that I heard about Alfie Boe - straight away I realised that he was worth listening to, especially as he wasn't one of the posh opera singers we are used to - in fact is the first official 'bad boy' of the genre. Last year I was honoured to attend The Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, and witnessed Alfie singing 'Over The Hills And Far Away' - from the 'Sharpe' series on TV - AWESOME!
As soon as I heard that Amazon was selling this book I immediately pre-ordered it and waited for it, with some impatience, to arrive. Well, I've read it and thoroughly enjoyed it, and realised that his life, in certain ways, paralelled mine (without the singing I hasten to add!), and the fact that he says it as it is, not how others want to hear! Keep it up Alfie, enjoy your life, family and keep on saying what you think. "It's exactly what it says on the tin" to paraphrase a well known advertisement...

5.0 out of 5 stars Gobsmacking Page Turner 12 Sept. 2012
By CW
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I hope I'm using "gobsmacking" correctly! (I'm a Yankee) This is a stunning, raw page turner you won't want to put down or read just once. Alfie is a marvelous storyteller who brings you into his life and his emotions as though he were speaking with you, in your living room or at your kitchen table, all night long. You can "hear" his voice and feel his passions and crazy making struggles which are described with gobsmacking openness and honesty. I loved the marvelous family stories which he heard during his youth. These are told with such immediacy that it's hard to imagine he wasn't there himself. It's clear that he came from a storytelling family where his parents genuinely talked with him, and you can imagine him as a little boy, soaking in every word, wide-eyed. That's exactly how I felt reading Alfie's book. It is impossible to read this without being swept up into his emotions - his rage, fears, despairs, longings, love, tenderness... and his humor. The book reveals the thrilling and ghastly struggles he went through for his dreams: confronting rigid, often heartless institutions; meeting artists and addicts; finding his own path through the muck and mire; falling in love; keeping his faith; and discovering people who believed in him and would fight with him, like his relentless, dogged manager, Neil Ferris. Throughout all of this is woven a deeply moving love story - love in all its forms. We get to know more about his funny, magnificent father, whom Alfie has talked of in his best interviews, and their heart-stopping connection which remains unbroken by death. There's Alfie's Mum, a tiny scrappy fighter who I'm sure could protect her entire litter of nine against anyone in Lancashire. And there's Sarah, his wife. Read more ›
