Book Description

A car mechanic turned internationally acclaimed opera star, Alfie Boe has taken Broadway by storm, conquered the West End and has won the hearts of the nation.
The first official bad boy of opera, this is the story of his life - the ups and the downs, from finding fame to losing his father - and of his love affair with music.
A story not typical of most musical stars, Alfie's dreams of singing only became a reality when fate intervened in the form of a stranger: he was training as a car mechanic when a customer overheard him singing and told him about a London audition. Alfie tried out, got the part and has never looked back.
Celebrated worldwide and lauded by Baz Luhrman and Cameron Mackintosh as the best tenor we've produced in a generation, for the first time, he will grant his millions of fans an intimate glimpse into the life of the man they adore.

Product Description

He s made it on talent, grit and determination, rather than let the establishment grind him down. He s remained his own man and a natural born entertainer...The break which changed his life came when a TVR customer urged him to audition with London s D Oyly Carte. At 19, he turned up in lumberjack shirt, jeans, boots, looked at the posh suits and ball gowns, thought I don t fit in here. And then proved why he did. The rest, as they say, is history. His story. And it s there to be read... --Bringing it Home , Feature, The Blackpool Gazette

Alfie Boe, the blokish tenor, was never a car mechanic. He once sprayed the undersides of TVRs black in Blackpool that s all. 5.0 out of 5 stars A roller coaster. 3 Sept. 2012
By jp.rev
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
First, I must admit i am a big fan of Alfie Boe, so came to this book with a few stars in my eyes. after reading it I have a new repect for this highly talented man.
The fist chapter, is no gentle introduction, but a rather shocking telling of his awful experience while performing 'The pearl Fishers' for ENO, 2010. An time when he seriously considered giving up his struggle for recognition, and stop singing. Thankfully things did turn round, and he became the star we know today.
His story takes us from his birth and early days in Fleetwood. the youngest of nine children. The huge influence of his music loving father,Through the roller coaster up and downs of trying to make it in the world of Opera. And finally, literally finding his own voice, through his huge success in 'Les Miserable'.
Alfie has opened his heart, in this book, telling of very personal and moving times in his life, and lifting the lid,on the establishment of Opera, ruffling feathers and earning himself the name of 'bad boy of Opera'. A name I think he quite enjoys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alfie: My Story 14 Nov. 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
As a fan of Alfie Boe, especially in his role as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, and having seen him interviewed recently, I was interested to find out more about this apparently genuine and very talented performer. "Alfie: My Story" is, in my opinion, down to earth, honest, funny in places and very moving in others. He shares so many details of his personal life, including the very close bonds with, and love for, his family, his loyalty to his friends and the disappointments and successes in his professional life. Mr Boe's story shows his determination to succeed and the hard work he put in to get to where he is today. This thoroughly enjoyable and illuminating autobiography is very easy to read, includes many photographs from his childhood to present day and left me feeling that Alfie Boe is a thoroughly grounded, modest family man who deserves every bit of his success. A 5* read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have a chin-wag with Alfie 8 Sept. 2012
"Bizet nearly killed me" is the striking opening sentence of this engaging autobiography written by English tenor, Alfie Boe, beginning just one of the many amusing and sometimes, moving, stories of Alfie's life so far, told as he traces his journey from his humble beginnings in Fleetwood, England, to fame on the world singing stage. Alfie's story is, like any life, a story of ups and downs, although many will be surprised at just how grim some aspects of Alfie's journey have been. From being bossed around by the toffs at the Royal Opera House, to sleeping on a li-lo in a corridor in New York, life has not always been a bed of roses for England's favourite tenor. Amusing also, are the stories from behind the scenes of performances gone wrong, relationships established and challenges overcome.
Alfie has bravely shared some of the most poignant episodes of his life, from the loss of his father, to falling in love, the birth of his children and to finally establishing himself as a singing sensation admired throughout the world. One of the book's major achievements, however, is that Alfie's voice, even filtered through ghost writer, Alex Godfrey, remains authentically his, in tone, syntax and semantics. Reading this book makes you feel as if you have just had a visit from Alfie Boe. Sit down, have a cuppa, and enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a talent 21 Oct. 2012
As a huge Alfie Boe I did read this knowing quite a lot about him already but I still learnt a lot about his life and of course it is always interesting to read it from their own point of view. The story about his struggle to make it is so well written you really feel the emotion behind it and I felt his desperation when he considers quitting it all. There was also plenty of laughs especially from the early years of his life. Overall it is just a fantastic book for any Boe fan to read and experience his life through him and thank goodness for Bring Him Home is all I'll say.

5.0 out of 5 stars Singing well is the best revenge 3 Sept. 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Alfie Boe is the best singer I have ever heard, and that includes Pavarotti and Presley. This is his story of how he went from a small blue-collar town in northwest England to playing in opera houses, theaters, arenas and concert halls around the world. It is a story of hard knocks and triumphs, told in Alfie's soft Lancastrian voice, almost as if you are sharing a pint or two at the local pub. For many years, Alfie held back from saying what he really thought about some of the opera snobs and music industry idiots he encountered in his schooling and career. Now he says it all. But it is not just getting his own back. Alfie is generous to his friends and to those who helped him on his path to stardom. His love of his family - parents, siblings, wife and children is heartwarming. This is a fascinating look at a complicated and dynamic man. If you have ever seen or heard Alfie perform, this is a must. If you have not seen him, reading this will drive you to the web, searching for songs and video clips from this terrific tenor. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Boe The Best 11 Oct. 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Alfie: My Story my interpretation is "Boe The Best". I rarely finish a book, but Alfie: My Story, I could NOT put it down, even at 2.30am in bed. It was well written, easy to read, very down to earth and true. What a determined and hard working young boy, then man is Alfie Boe. Parts of the story made you laugh and others made you cry. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys reading a true life story of a wonderful man's experiences of his long undaunted determination to achieve such success as he has. Well done Alfie Boe. The only complaint I had was that it finished too quickly, I wanted more.
