More About the Author

Shirley was born in West Kirby, near Liverpool, and studied fashion and dress design at Liverpool Art School, before continuing her studies at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in Oxford. She then embarked on a career as a freelance illustrator in London, where she still lives today. She illustrated other writers' work, including Noel Streatfeild, Alison Uttley, Ian Seraillier, Margaret Mahy and notably Dorothy Edwards's My Naughty Little Sister series. Shirley began to write and draw her own picture books when her children were young.

Her first book - Lucy and Tom's Day - was published in 1960, and she followed it with, among others, Dogger and the Alfie series. Shirley Hughes has won the Other Award, the Eleanor Farjeon Award, and the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration twice, for Dogger in 1977 and for Ella's Big Chance in 2003. In 2007 Dogger was voted the public's favourite Greenaway winner of all time. Shirley received an OBE in 1999 for services to Children's Literature.

Review

"Shirley Hughes is a national treasure" (Philip Pullman)

"There's just something so reassuring about Hughes' colourful drawings of the day-to-day activities that you know inside out . . . Words and pictures merge seamlessly . . . Hughes is a magical storyteller with an instinctive understanding of the mind of the pre-schooler . . . She makes the ordinary extraordinary" (Guardian)

"I am reminded of something John Diamond wrote: 'This, here, now, is what happiness is. Enjoy it'. To me, the work of Shirley Hughes says something very similar" (Wendy Cope Daily Telegraph)

Book Description

A bumper collection of five stories and four short interludes starring Shirley Hughes' much-loved character, Alfie and his baby sister Annie Rose.

I bought this book many years ago for my daughters. We all fell in love with Alfie and Annie Rose and I am now buying a copy for my grandaughter. She may only be 5 months old but I want to make sure she shares the same pleasures that her mum did!!

We were given Rhymes for Annie Rose which we love. Then I bought the Alife and Annie Rose storybook. This is a lovely book that my 2 year old daughter can relate to. My 5 year old boy also likes to come and listen to the stories being read.

This is a favourite book for all generations in our household. Warming and covers most of life's adventures a small child would encounter.

Alfie & Annie Rose have to be 2 of the most wonderful characters for pre-school children. Alfie must be about 4 & his sister about 2, so just the ages of the children who will be having this book read to them. There are several stories in the book, each of just the right length for a child of this age.

The great thing about Alfie & Annie Rose is that they do everyday things that children do. My favourite story is about Alfie's new wellingtons which don't feel quite right when he puts them on for the first time to go to the park. Getting your boots on the wrong feet is just the everyday thing that happens to all children.

The books are beautifully illustrated in a slightly old fashioned manner which works well with the stories themselves.

These were a firm favourite in our house with the children & also with their Grandma who loved to read them these stories. In fact, I couldn't resist buying this book for my great nephew last year.

Children's books get no better than Shirley Hughes. This is a wonderful companion and an excellent choice for bedtime. My children think they are, indeed, Alfie and Annie Rose!
