No no no! You have the synopsis all wrong! Alexis is a troubled man who has written a letter (the book) to his wife to explain why he has left her and their newly-born child. Although it is never overtly stated, it is clear he had to leave because he was gay and couldn't live a lie any longer. This is no end-of-book revelation: it is clear early on.

The author (all her work is outstanding) wrote this at a very young age - can't quite remember how old, & given she was a she it is a quite remarkable piece. Beautiful, sad, sensitive, and touching. Alexis reviews his life, and poignant incidents in it, and explains how they fit together, and how they affected him. He pours out his emotions to his wife Monique, to tell her how he felt at times in their relationship, for example when they had their child.

You feel no malice towards this torn man, only apathy, melancholy, and sympathy.

One of my favourite quotations from all time comes from this book, along the lines of: 'Forgive me, not for leaving you, but for having stayed so long.' What more can I say?

I had never read anything by Marguerite Yourcenar before, so I started from her first one. I found it an interesting reading because it opens to new historical and intimate perseptives about the difficult communication between gays/lesbians and the wolrd around them at the beginning of last century.
