Although this book is a little difficult to read this is a clear account of the life of the Russian Emperor who defeated Napoleon.
Alexander 1 was a well meaning autocrat who governed a chaotic empire and switched abruptly from trying to free his subjects
from tyranny to clamping down on any form of self expression. One needs quite a lot of background to pick up this book and read it
and I feel someone who is interested in Napoleon and Alexander 1 might prefer a more popular account which assumes no previous knowledge of the period.

Well researched and well written. A readable and insightful biography of one of the most enigmatic figures of the period.

This book has been so dreadfully translated that it is not possible to read, even with a knowledge of French to make out the intentions of the original author. Where was the editor? the university that published it should be ashame, it was a real waste of money. I ordered it from a review in a reasonably respected literary journal - the reviewer should be ashamed as well to have reviewed it favourably and not mentioned the lamentable style of the English text.
