When I was 16 yrs old I worked in daycare, one day I found this book and read it to my class...It was so great, every child soon knew every word and I was ask to read almost everyday. That was 14 yrs ago, I now have my own 6 yr old son, and this is his favorite book, we read it all the time. Even my mother who is near 70 yrs old laughs each time she reads it. It is a wonderful book for all ages. Everyone can relate to having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day!

I bought this book for our six year old grandson on the back of the glowing reviews posted. However I would point out a few things. The language/culture references are all USA - gum, carpool, lima beans, railroad train, sailboat, smushed, tack, Hersey bar, jellyroll, mom, elevator, shoe store, sneakers. This can be an overload for an child in the UK who doesn't use these everyday phrases. There is a hopelessness and lack of cheer about the story, no one tries to comfort or cheer Alexander, his brothers, parents and friends are all against him or without consideration. At the end of the day there is only bleakness. Personally I wasn't as keen as everyone else about this book. It may grow on us but really I don't see the value of ramming another culture's phrases home day after day. It seems cruel to laugh at someone else having a 'horrible' time although of course nobody actually dies. The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day things are smallish annoyances. Just thought I'd right the balance here with my reflections on what seems to be a really popular book.

I love this book...It shows children how others have bad days. The way the book is written makes the children you read to want to participate. Pretty soon you have the children talking aloud with you as you read!

I adore this book not only because it's an excellent children's book, but because it appeals to the child in all of us. When I'm having a bad day, I simply pick this book off of my shelf, read it, and find myself laughing my troubles away. It's easy to forget that we shouldn't sweat the small stuff, and this is an important lesson for children as well as for "bigger" children. Alexander helps me keep in tune with my own child's moods and days- I've learned to accept a few more messes here and there. Buy a copy for your office today! It will put a smile on your face!

Have you ever in your life had a horrible, no good, very bad day? I have, and I have had many of them, but I never knew how to express it as well as Alexander.

He should have known, Alexander should have known when he went to bed chewing gum, that the worst was yet to come. Then he woke up with gum in his hair, and it all went down hill from there. Thank goodness, Alexander knows how to express himself. Keeping all of this misery inside would do no good at all. One thing after another, but somehow Alexander survived. That is the really good thing about stories, we can all learn from them. Parents/teachers will like reading this book, it is so much fun for the children to listen to the sing song verse. The children will laugh with their adults and will ask questions about Alexander's day. They can explore ways to get around no good days.

The author, Judith Viorst, has been known to me for years. I like her writing a great deal. The illustrations by Ray Cruz are colorful and vibrant and depict Alexander and his misadventures for us all to enjoy. What great fun!

I have used this as part of self esteem and anger management sessions and it has been really good. No-one's day could ever be quite as bad as this one in reality - so you can always show that someone has had a worse day and dealt with it well. Thought it would have been nice if it was in colour, as the kids can loose interest in black & white picture.

This book got me through high school! On days when I was suffering from teen angst, my best friend would bring in her copy for me to read before the day began. Now I'm expecting a child in May, and this book is on our essential home library list. I can't wait to have an excuse to read it over and over again!

I've read this book for years to pre-school children. They love it! It's an animated and delightful story. I highly recommend this to any child or adult who's ever had a cruddy day. It's a great way to teach a child the joys of laughing at one's self & taking life less seriously!
