By Mr. D TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This review is for: Alexander O'Neal (Tabu Expanded Edition)
I would personally prefer jewel cases rather than the hardback book style presented here, but I do feel this is quite nicely done with a high quality finish, so I am happy with the presentation here (although the discs are not easy to get in and out of the sleeve easily). The book contains the lyrics and nice photographs of the original record labels. Clearly this has been a labour of love for visual presentation, but then we turn to the music...

After all the hype on Facebook and months of agonising wait for these TABU reissues, this is quite a disappointment. I had read other reviews and some gripes on Facebook and hoped this was just some negative people having a moan. But unfortunately they are right. One of the most import things about these tracks is the stellar production courtesy of Monte Moir, Jam & Lewis, so it is vitally important that the sound quality preserves what are top quality studio recordings. Disc one sounds fine and as you would expect. But, the second disc of bonus tracks clearly contains some vinyl rips. The odd crackle I could handle, but not the turntable rumble on "What's Missing (Remix)". The sound quality on "You Were Meant To Be My Lady (Extended Dance Remix) is highly dubious. These tracks sound like they have had some sort of software intervention because there is a metallic quality that isn't on the originals. I compared the sound quality to the Japanese promo CD "The Remix Album", but they are also on the easier to find CD "Twelve Inch Mixes" so couldn't the tracks be taken from there instead of from vinyl?

1.0 out of 5 stars I love this record to death, but.. 23 Aug 2013
Format:Audio CD
..I'm not impressed by this expanded edition at all.

Demon Music Group did a bad job on this one. I haven't bought it and probably won't. This means, I can't say anything about the sound quality. But I can say that this expanded edition is not really expanded. It's more like a remastered CD plus bonus tracks. Here's how a REAL EXPANDED EDITION should look like:

* CD1
01 -- A Broken Heart Can Mend
02 -- If You Were Here Tonight
03 -- Do You Wanna Like I Do
04 -- Look At Us Now
05 -- Innocent / Alex 9000 / Innocent II
06 -- What's Missing
07 -- You Were Meant To Be My Lady (Not My Girl)
08 -- Are You The One [B-Side / 3:40]

* CD2
01 -- If You Were Here Tonight [Soft Version / 5:06]
02 -- Innocent [7" Short Edit / 4:43]
03 -- Innocent [Instrumental / 9:55]
04 -- What's Missing [Extended Mix / 8:28]
05 -- What's Missing [Instrumental / 8:28]
06 -- You Were Meant To Be My Lady [Extended / 9:57]
07 -- You Were Meant To Be My Lady [Remix / 5:50]
08 -- You Were Meant To Be My Lady [Party Mix / 5:40]
09 -- You Were Meant To Be My Lady [Acappella Mix / 3:00]

Also, the "Extended Dance Remix" of Innocent is the same version as the the album version (a.k.a. "Medley"). Why would anyone put the same track twice on this edition?

1.0 out of 5 stars Ouch! 20 April 2013
By T.S.
Format:MP3 Download|Verified Purchase
I love music and I'm a collector of compact discs, even if I own most of the appropriate vinyl (and original CD) issues.
I've bought the latest Tabu-Re-Issues (Alexander O'Neal, Cherrelle & The S.O.S. Band) and much to my regrets I'll have to say: Those Tabu-Re-Releases are rubbish!
The first CD (Alexander O'Neal debut) sounds ok, a bit louder than my old edition (CBS/Tabu ZK 30331) - all 6 Bonus tracks are vinyl recordings!
[...] should've informed potential custumors about this before the release date.
I've cancelled all those pre-orders of my desired re-issues...

5.0 out of 5 stars Alexander O'Neal created Soul 7 Sep 2004
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Today, albums are brought out like bubble gum, and like bubble gum the flavour goes after a while. But then Alexander O'Neal came along with excellent debut album. This is an necessary purchase for anyone who has been or is in love. The song entitled "if you were here tonight" is just part of a special Album, rich content and voice. Mr O'Neal sets the standards that only a few could try to follow. After reading this click add to checkout button, buy it. Play the Album while dancing with Boyfriend, Girlfriend , husband or wife. And if love that you both feel for each other isn't improved by this album send it back and buy it again and play it again to does.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a voice! 22 April 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I really loved this album when it first came out and I'm now thrilled to have it on CD - I play all my CD's in my car travelling to and from work and i'm finding the sound quality is fine? The main album is full of quality soulful tunes and for me A broken heart, If you were tonight and What's Missing are the highlights but to be honest the whole album is great. CD 2 bonus disc is a great addition but its all about the main album for me, superb production from Jam& Lewis, great vocal performance by Alex and some superb tunes. The whole thing is presented in a real neat CD "book" with some really interesting, knowledgable notes - Can't wait for some more TABU re-releases - Miss this at your peril soul fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars Alexander O'Neal - The Beginning 6 Mar 2003
By V. Ryan
Format:Audio CD
Alexander O'Neal is a strange artist. Blessed with such a great voice and the oppertunity to work with such great producers in Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis he seemed to have faded out of the spotlight, despite still making great Soul Music.
This was the big mans first album in the year of 1985.
The album is split into two parts - like the follow up smash hit album "Hearsay". In those days it was all on double vinyl LP.
Do not be put off by the fact that there are only 7 tracks. There are more that 2 tracks which go on for over 5 minutes.
O'Neal shows us all for the first time that he can carry the soulful ballads like "If You Were Here Tonight" and then hit us with some uptempo funk like "Innocent"
The album kicks off with:
A Broken Heart Can mend
This track is beautiful. Its soul music in its element. Its from the soul and a message to all heart broken men - "It takes a little time, till you can love again, but I ain't got time to wait through another heart ache"
Track 2
If You Were Here Tonight
The best song on the album and my all time favourite song - By O'Neal and any other artist.
For me it is the best Love song ever written. It was a single and still gets air play today. Its one of those songs that people know but forget who it is by. Vocally O'Neal is at his peak. If you have seen him live then you will know how well he delivers this song.
Track 3
Do You Wanna Like I do
This song follows on from track 2. The same drum beat is evident in the background, but Alex uses his superbly toned voice to make this song sound all so different. A great track.
Track 4
Look At Us Now
A song for any person who is in a relationship. "Look at us now, will we always be together, whos to say?
