Product Description

McCaig, writing in The Oban Times

The glorious thing about Ms Campbell's book is that it took a long time to write and an equally long time to research. Digging around for fact, proven fact, in the 13th century is not easy. Indeed, it is enormously difficult as there are not too many contemporary records on which to draw. Ms. Campbell at her Kilberry home has carefully and slowly amassed them (contemporary records)and she has put them down on paper with the skill of a born writer who knows what she wants to say and has that wonderful knack of telling it in a way that the reader is hooked and doesn't want to put the volume down until the last page has been turned. There aren't too many good, very readable books on the history of our native land (Scotland). Marion Campbell's "Alexander III" is an exception and has been well worth waiting for.

Book Description

Full-length biography of this important Scots monarch, whose accession just 750 years ago followed the unexpected demise of Alexander II (in Kerrera, July 1249). Known to every schoolchild for his own untimely end one dark and stormy night, but perhaps not fully appreciated for his work in maintaining and enhancing a coherent and independent Scottish nation, this life by gifted historian and novelist Marion Campbell is a timely and riveting read. The man and his kingdom are thoroughly researched and the relationship between Scotland and other European countries is examined, together with the complex connections between their royal houses. The fruit of an abiding interest, this is a stimulating work and will be much enjoyed.

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent, highly informative account, 17 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Alexander III: King of Scots (Paperback)
The book begins with the death of King Alexander II on Kerrera in Argyll in 1249, and the ascension of his son, a 7 year old boy also named Alexander, to the Scottish throne. Marion Campbell manages well to revive the political struggles during Alexander's minority to the times when he considered himself old enough to take government of his realm into his own hands, his reign itself (incl. details of the Battle of Largs), and subsequently to the well-known tragedy at Kinghorn which ended the life & reign of Alexander III so suddenly. Frequently drawing from contemporary sources, Ms Campbell creates a vivid picture of everyday life in Alexander's Scotland, with the emphasis on both his personal as well as political actions. The book is very well researched and there is plenty of background information available (e.g., lists of religious foundations and establishments of royal burghs of the period, etc). A brilliant account of Scotland's "Golden Age".

4.0 out of 5 stars People and life in the age of Alexander III, 28 Jan 2007
By Shawn Marchinek "McDonald" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Alexander III: King of Scots (Paperback)
Marion Campbell has written a very factual and informative book of the age of Alexander III, the last King of Scots before the great competition for the Scottish throne and civil war leading to Robert the Bruce's accent to the throne. I originally bought this book expecting a detailed story of the life of Alexander III but I now realize their is not much information from the 13th century to truly flesh out a full biography without making it a historical novel as Campbell states in her preface. As the book progresses from Alexander's minority we get a good picture of the political situation between England, France, Norway and Scotland, plus the crusades. It is very evident that this is an era of Nobles and landed men owing fealty for many lands in multiple kingdoms. The lines of loyalty are blurred. I liked the occasional sprinkling of court cases or case studies of the common man in different conflicts from money owed for wine to a stolen horse and how the local authorities judged. This gives us a glimpse of life for the common man and not just the nobles. A lot of attention is on Henry III who is Alexander's father-in-law and his battles to dominate France and Scotland. This is less of a biography but a wonderful collection of facts and information from multiple sources during Alexander III's reign. A must have book for the serious students of Scottish history.
