3.0 out of 5 stars Very very short introduction to Buddhism, 2 Aug 2011

As the previous reviewer said this book is beautiful and would make a excellent first introduction to Buddhism. I would go further and say that it is perfect for children aged 8+ and would be great book to have in schools.

My only concern is that is rather short- more than half of the 160 pages are taken up by pictures. As such for lots of big topics you just get little introductory paragraphs. It would be easy to find this and better information online so I wouldn't say it was worth buying the book for the content- I'd recommend Buddhism For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyles Paperback)) or Buddhism: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) instead.

P.S. Looking back at the book having written this I discovered a second concern: the section on the Three Characteristics of Existence is unclear and also gave me the impression that this formula originated with Ananda Maitreya, the 20th century Theravadin, rather than with the Buddha himself (which is what the other sources I've seen imply).

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful introduction to Buddhism, 6 Nov 2007
By
Helen J. McLachlan (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The information presented here is a very basic, simple introduction to Buddhism. The beauty of the book is in its rich, colourful artwork and the simplicity of its explanations. It is an ideal first book explaining the history, ethos, practices and symbolism of Buddhism, although if you already have some knowledge and are researching further, you would be disappointed. This is one to whet your appetite and delight the eye. It would also be a good book for explaining Buddhism to others.
