Alex and the Wigpowder Treasure (or Alex and the Ironic Gentleman in the US) is a great read for 9 - 12 year-olds and follows the adventures of Alex Morningside, a smart 10-year-old, as she hunts for her abducted Year 6 teacher, Mr Underwood.

On the way she encounters many perils, from the Daughters of the Founding Fathers' Preservation Society to a train that goes nowhere.

At 387 pages, the book is long, but don't let that put you off - it's a non-stop roller coaster of adventure and kids will love it.
