About the Author

JOHN HARDING began writing a series of books on sporting history in the early 1980s, the first being a biography of Billy Meredith, a legendary Edwardian football star and founder of the PFA. His second book was about the boxing champion Jack Kid Berg, followed closely by the biography of an earlier East End Jewish boxing hero, Ted Kid Lewis. In 1988, he produced the biography of legendary Arsenal star, Alex James. There followed two comprehensive sporting histories: For The Good of the Game, the Official history of the Professional Footballer's Association, and Lonsdale's Belt, a history of British professional boxing. He has worked on various Sky and BBC TV and radio programmes and contributes articles to publications such as The London Magazine, When Saturday Comes and Soccer Review, as well as the website www.givemefootball.com.

Format: Hardcover
I can remember John Harding interviewing my father about his recollections of his famous father, but when the book came out much of it was news to me...such was the lack of family history other than some rather tall anecdotes handed down over the years. So it was refreshing for someone to do all the legwork and get everything down as fact.
The only let down is the way it all rather falls apart after the playing career was finished...but this rather reflects my grandfathers fate...years of glory and a quick, rather sad exit. Over the years I've met many old fans who swear there was never a better footballer than my grandfather - we have their memories, very little film but we do have this great biography - thanks to you John Harding

First class footballing autobiography which set the life of one of the pre war footballing greats into a social context that enhanced understanding of both the importance of football amongst the working class and how players operated in this world where they were mere chattels of the club. However this didn`t lead to any loss of focus from the career of Alex James. It made me release how every high earning player of today is worth every penny and how important the PFA is in supporting other players! The book is well written and covers Alex James the person as well as the player.

This is a well written and very interesting historical account of one of the all time footballing greats - As time goes on it's easy to forget our home grown footballing history. Good historical accounts like this are rare; It compelled me to read it cover to cover without putting it down.
