Product Description

Product Description

Three-cup espresso coffee maker, in 18/10 stainless steel with cast iron handle and magnetic stainless steel bottom. The 9090 isn't just the first espresso coffee maker in Alessi history: it was also Alessi's first object for the kitchen after the 1930s, the first of Alessi Compasso d'Oro awards (1979), Alessi's first object to be inducted into the Permanent Design Collection at the New York MOMA, and of course it's the best-loved Alessi coffee maker, as well as Alessi's first amphibious object, i.e. it is for kitchen use, but with its high design quality it can also be brought directly to the table.

5.0 out of 5 stars High End Moka Pot for Great Coffee - 29 Jun 2009
Verified Purchase
Expensive, but well made.
Great looking piece of kit, works well.

I wanted a stainless steel moka-pot to go on a glass-topped halogen hob.
We have had a couple of less expensive pots from a famous maker that were poorly made. I went ahead and spent the money on the 6 cup version of the Sapper pot by Alessi. However, I found that I frequently made half a pot and messing about with the 3 cup adapter was a mess and a fiddle. So when I had the opportunity I went ahead and bought the 3 cup version. Perhaps it is a bit excessive but I'm very happy with this purchase.

Things to be aware of:

Alessi Spare parts aren't easy to come by.

3 Cups is 150ml about a 3rd of a large mug.
It's not Espresso, but it is STRONG and can easily stand a bit of dilution (Americano style).

Coarse grinds work best as the holes in the funnel are not particularly fine.

The base is only 11cm in diameter - a smallish ring on your hob is best.

The handle looks like plastic in the photographs but it is in fact stainless steel. It is used to clamp the pot closed - a system that is far more convenient and error free than other screw on pots.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST ever espresso coffee maker 20 Dec 2010
This gracefully designed pot is absolutely marvelous because of the original locking system. Instead of the usual tricky screw thread connection, it has very easy 'click to lock' system, which works every time without flaw. There is no steam leaking out of releasable connection and the pot is handy to open even when still hot. I have used it now many years in daily bases, even carried it always with me to outdoor trekking, since it is a perfect fit to my small camping cooker. I love it so that I have been given it to present for many of my friends when ever having a chance.

1.0 out of 5 stars So disappointed 23 Aug 2011
By Annie R
Nearly all the reviews I read on this product claimed it was excellent so I was expecting great things of it. It arrived today and I carefully read and followed the instructions and ...... it leaked! I tried it over and over again and despite double checking that the washer was correctly located, there were no stray coffee grounds around the filter and that the locking handle was firmly in place, it still leaked hot coffee from the join between the boiler and the upper container. I have arranged with Amazon for it to be replaced in the hope that this was an unfortunate one off. In its favour, the product is sturdily built and has a good quality feel about it.
Take 2. Replacement coffee maker arrived and as with the original it also leaks although not as badly. Additionally this one has a poor and very sharp weld where one of the lugs joins the boiler. I am returning it, and in the meantime I have now placed an order for two Stellar Art Deco espresso makers - one two cup and one six cup - which have glowing reviews on this site. These two (with express delivery) come to the same price as the Alessi 9090/3 FM!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-designed 26 Oct 2010
I'm no coffee expert but my boyfriend and I do love stove-top espresso makers as they are more efficient than the machines or cafétieres. We had previously bought a cheap one to try it out before I bought this one. What a difference! It has a beautiful and well-thought-out design. Most coffee makers have a screw-on/screw-off base which makes it difficult to get on and off, and causes the coffee to spill all over the place. The Alessi clicks on very firmly with no hassle. It has a tab at the top so that opening the lid is easy and you don't get scalded by steam (learned from experience). Probably my favourite aspect of the design is the non-spilling spout. With the other coffee maker half of the coffee ended up in the saucer because it dribbled from the spout along the body, but the Alessi has none of this trouble. It also doesn't dis-colour like the aluminium makers.

Just be careful not to burn yourself on the metal handle, and the coffee maker parts stay very hot for a while so take care when dismantling.
