As this was a Christmas present I didn't mind paying the price for an Alessi product. I have to admit apart from looking good, it is really sturdy and does an excellent job. Realised afterwards that in the opposite direction it cracks almonds and hazelnuts too. I didn't know that at the time of purchase. A good choice!

Alessi Crack Nutcrackers, (AM26)

These must be the rolls royce of nutcrackers. The only crackers that allow you to retrieve the whole nut in one piece. Very robust construction excellent product.

We bought this nut cracker as a present because the design looked an improved version of one we have had in the family for several generation. Our old one relied on teath to grip the nut but they are worn smooth and the small nuts slip out.

On arrival it felt a quality product and the handles reversed nicely around the bridge. It was quite a bit heavier than our old ones and the handles were thicker.

It was used for the first time on Christmas day and we tried it first on walnuts and hazel nuts and it did a wonderful job with the nuts sitting snugly in the hollows. When it was my turn I tried it on an almond nut. The nut refused to crack despite trying several positions. Obviusly I wasn't pressing hard enough so I squeezed a bit harder.

That was alarming as I thought I felt the handles bend inwards. I couldn't believe it so I reversed them and tried again and felt them bend back. Clearly the design is brilliant but the metal is too soft compared to our old crackers that have not suffered this problem.

As an experiment I tried pipe grips as well as some mole grips similar to Draper DIY Series 09216 225 mm Straight-Jaw Self-Grip Pliers at £4.95. No problem with either of these but found the mole grips better as you can have a minimum setting to ensure you don't completely crush the nut.

Very disappointed but they are going back.

This feels right - action is nicely controlled, no excessive force being required. Copes with a wide range of sizes. Should last forever, being made of stainless steel. Most other nutcrackers are of cast iron, which eventually means that fatigue will cause them to fracture. Expensive, but worth it.
