When Lily Parisi caught her fiancé James `in flagrante delicto' with another woman in her house in Sydney where he lived with her, and sponged off her wealth and inheritance, there was only one course of action left to her, which was to break off the engagement and regain her dignity preferably far away from Sydney. I guess this is what most of us will do if we ever found ourselves in similar situation. We will need healing time and where best to heal than in the bosom of friends and family. She wasted no time in going home to Italy to be with her aunt (her mother's sister) who was at the same time her god mother, since both her parents were dead. Lillian is a professional chef and now owner of her parent's upmarket restaurant in Sydney and their vast estate. Her aunty was overjoyed to have her in Italy and so was her aunt's foster son Alessandro del Marco. Her aunty Sophia recently lost her beloved husband Giuseppe dalla Silvestri, and having Lily with her, was just what the doctor ordered. With a vulnerable heart, Lily was very weary of men, more so Alessandro whom she has had a huge crush on as a young teenager. She no longer trust her judgement of men. Will she have the courage to trust and love again?
Alessandro del Marco, had a rough childhood and survived untold hardship on the streets of Milan until he was rescued by Giuseppe and his wife. They gave him a home, became the parent he did not have and instilled in him the values and sense of self worth that enabled him to become the man that he was now. He would do anything for Sophia and since Giuseppe's death has been more protective of her, so he was overjoyed to see her happiness and pleasure in having Lily with her. Alessandro has always had a soft spot for Lily or Lilliana as he likes to use her full given name. He was not prepared for the impact her serene and graceful nature would have on him. Will the hardened heart of this Italian melt and be laid bare by this one woman that touches something deep in his inner being? What is it about this woman that brings out the desire to protect and cherish in Alessandro? They say that womanly purity and grace has a way of awakening respect, admiration and love in a man this was the effect Lilliana had on Alessandro.
This is will go down as one of the best HB books that I have ever read. The romance was tender, loving, caring and filled with chivalry. They sure don't write them like this anymore. What I liked best about this book was the dignity and poise exhibited by both Hero and the Heroine. Many a time in M&B novels we are given to believe that the two main characters trying to come together have no control over their emotions and passions, and as such behave like animals sometimes. This I often find disturbing because part of our reason for being is to master control of ourselves. In this book you will love the Hero, who despite the attraction and love he felt for this woman, constantly had to apply self control and give her time to heal and come to terms with his feelings for her. He was always there in the background, protecting her whenever it became necessary. With every scene you could feel the depth and breadth of this man's love for this woman as well as his patience in courting her. I enjoyed this book very much. It is a definite keeper.
