surprisingly, I'm going to review the PRODUCT, not the dumb freebies it comes with...

its amazing! great sound quality, easy to use controls and top-notch functionality, while the casing is only plastic, it feels like a high-grade, durable plastic, whether or not it was metal casikng i would take care of it because obviously digital appliances are sensitive no matter what housing they have.

the installation was quick and painless, i plugged it in, and my PC registered and installed its drivers almost instantly! I'm currently running a pair of M-Audio AV40s out of the main outputs and everything works great, there's obviously latency in the recording, but none for monitoring (as the signal will come through the main outs before hitting the PC) but as long as you know what you're doing, you will be able to configure your DAW to compensate for it, i usually put on a metronome and record it with a mic, and compare it, that way you can be exact with the latency correction.

ANYWAY! all in all it's a great device for the price and i don't think i'll be needing a new one any time soon! a great buy!

I am updating this review after owning this for a few weeks. The more I have used this the more pleased with it I am. It works well with Linux which is an essential for me. The 24 bit audio sounds good and the unit has lots of features for the price making it versatile. I had read criticisms about construction but it seemed OK: I have managed to buy a plastic container to hold it as damage to exposed knobs & switches in transit seems the big danger.

Why spend a fortune on a portastudio type device when this can turn your computer into one for a lot less. Also, look at a Linux distro like 'Ubuntu Studio' to use lots of free software - so much more than the included crippleware on the disc that comes with the io2. It is a bit of a learning curve but worth it as the software is brilliant these days.

Well I didn't actually buy the Alesis from Amazon, but from a high street store after speaking for a while to one of their staff. He highly recommended this product, saying it would fill all my requirements. Basically, I want to record the audio and midi of my piano with excellent quality onto my computer, yet still have "room" to plug in anything else I may acquire (mics, etc). I have to say, he was spot on. I can't praise this highly enough. It's pretty cheap for what it does, and it does it brilliantly.

For those wondering what this is, or why you might actually need it - it's basically an audio interface. An interface takes a signal from one device and makes it into a signal manageable by another device. In this case it's taking the audio from your Piano / Mic and making it so that your Computer can process this audio / midi. Call it an external hard drive with fancy bits attached, if you like.

So the device itself. It's small and compact, and looks sleek and professional. It's quite light, and doesn't have a metal finish, but that's just minor cosmetic details. How it actually performs is the important bit.

It comes bundled with Cubase 5LE, which I actually like. Maybe it's not top of the range, but it certainly beats audacity, and if you don't have any paid software, it will certainly be helpful. It's easy to use and does the job I need it to do. Included in the box is a USB cable (The Alesis connects to your PC via USB), and some instruction manuals.

Here is my setup: Yamaha Electric Piano - 6.3mm Audio Cables plug into the Left and Right Line in sockets on the Alesis. I also bought 2 midi cables - which I plug from the Piano into the Alesis. It's important to note that with midi cables that "Midi Out" on one device plugs into "Midi In" on another.

This has never worked the way I hoped, caused untold audio conflicts within my laptop, and is gathering dust as I speak

I have tried to install both the Cubase and Ableton unsuccessfully (the recording software that comes with this great audio interface)... if you buy this use it with free software like Audacity or else be prepared for major headaches (Cubase and Ableton's crappy registration process is extremely frustrating!) having said the negative; the interface itself, along with other Alesis products is a great piece of kit :-)
