Howe Gelb isn't an artist that is content to sit still. Constantly reworking and reinventing, Howe Gelb's work is a flowing river that is full of flying fish; unpredictable and difficult to harness. This quality makes him infuriating to some, and an effervescent compelling artist to others. (I certainly fall in with the latter)
Alegrias is one of his more concise albums in some time. Like his Sno Angel album a few years back, Alegrais is a collection of songs from his Giant Sand & solo catalog dating back to the mid 80's to the present. This time, there's a Spanish/Gypsy feel to the songs instead of a gospel vibe. Just as you'd never call Sno Angel a gospel record, Alegrias isn't a flamenco album, but there's plenty of flamenco guitar. His dusty 'Erosion rock' pairs beautifully with the Spanish style guitar. In fact, I find the versions of 4 door Maverick and Uneven Light of Day far superior to the originals.
Howe's music still has that chaotic anything-can-happen feel to it, but he's gained a patience and control (especially over his voice) that brings more power to the songs.
The vinyl has a gatefold sleeve and sounds crisp and warm. This album seems to be the only one of the massive Giant Sand/Howe Gelb reissues by Fire that is priced reasonably.
I'm disappointed that the rest of the Giant Sand vinyl reissues from Fire are all priced so expensively.
