Indiana Jones meets The Mummy!

Product Description

Egypt 1923.

Fifteen-year-old Alec Devlin is on his way to the Valley of the Kings. Accompanied by his faithful valet, Coates, Alec is to spend his summer holidays working on his Uncle Will's archaeological dig. It's not the first time he's spent his summer this way . . . but this year things are different.

Uncle Will and his young assistant, Tom Hinton, have recently made an amazing discovery - an ancient tomb hidden deep below the earth. But only hours after opening its doors, Uncle Will falls mysteriously ill and Tom seems to have disappeared without trace.

Together with Ethan Wade, the young American soldier of fortune who is managing the dig in Uncle Will's absence, and a pretty French woman called Madeleine Duval, Alec sets about unravelling the tomb's mysteries. Seemingly harmless animals have turned into rabid killers . . . long dead mummies are rising from their tombs . . . the spirit of a powerful High Priest is claiming the bodies of the living as his living hosts . . . Together Alec and Ethan must confront a terror that has waited three thousand years to be reborn.

Alec Devlin's first adventure is a really terrific bit of storytelling from Philip Caveney, fast becoming one of my favourite children's authors. After the whole family enjoyed the first two Sebastian Darke books so much (Sebastian Darke: Prince of Fools and Sebastian Darke: Prince of Pirates) I had no hesitation in picking this up when I spotted it on the shelf. And what a treat it was: pleasantly different to the Sebastian Darke books but with an equally varied and believable cast of characters and a plot that just never lets up for a second.

Alec Devlin is a young would-be archaeologist who goes to join his uncle's dig in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, where they believe they've found the lost tomb of a great Pharaoh. But by the time Alec gets there, his uncle William has gone mad and his colleague has disappeared, following an incident which we get a tantalising glimpse of in the fabulously scary prologue. As an ancient curse begins to claim more members of the team in suitably gory ways, it's up to Alec and his new friend, American Ethan Wade, to solve the mystery before it's too late.

Philip Caveney showed in Sebastian Darke that he really knows how to balance action, jokes and character development and keep them all coming thick and fast for the length of a novel. In this book he does it again, this time throwing in some brilliantly nasty frights and ancient supernatural foes to produce a book that young (and old) readers will love! And if your household is in the grip of Indiana Jones fever at the moment, Alec Devlin will go down an absolute treat.
