Product Description

Review

...recommended to anyone who has concerns about their own or someone else's drinking, who wants to understand what is going on...a resource that teases out some of the complexities of alcohol use in society and of alcohol dependence...[and] the often conflicting issues around definition, aetiology and treatment. (Chris Holmwood, Drug and Alcohol Services, South Australia )

Product Description

The third edition of this successful Facts title was authored by the late Dr Donald W. Goodwin, who wrote with a unique and engaging style defining alcoholism in very human terms. Although much of Dr Goodwin's assessments of alcoholism still hold true today, a great deal of progress has been made in the quest to better understand the underlying causes of the disease. This fourth edition, written by a group of Dr Goodwin's former colleagues, whilst retaining much of Dr Goodwin's original material, offering his unique perspective on alcoholism. The new edition includes updated information about the effects of alcohol consumption on the body, a new section on the particular sensitivity of women to the effects of drinking, and information and advice relating to the consequences of alcohol abuse for the abusers, their families and society.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent summary of the known `facts` about alcoholism., 6 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Alcoholism: The Facts (Paperback)
This book is an excellent starter for anyone who wants to know more about the current knowledge and treatment of alcoholism, especially if,like me, you are not sure if that is the problem with your relative or friend. I found the text clear and easy to understand, the chapter headings concise, and the information in the chapters allowed me to make up my own mind about what I needed to do, and gave me choices that I had never considered before.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Facts, 5 Mar 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Alcoholism: The Facts (Paperback)
Let me be clear, I used this book in my ongoing recovery from Alcoholism, I found it to be a great aid in furthering my knowledge base, it does NOT deal with the morass of issues that other books have done it sticks to a factual based path, it’s an extremely accurate book, I found it a page turner, a book that does not feel it needs to quote the “AA Big Book” every other chapter nor does it feel the need to resort to “spirituality” to explain any of it’s facts, if you are like me a recovering Alcoholic and you don’t feel the need to devote your entire existence to the AA (good work though they do) then I strongly suggest you obtain a copy of this book ASAP.

4.0 out of 5 stars Alcoholism (third edition) the facts, 15 Aug 2005
This review is from: Alcoholism: The Facts (Paperback)
An excellent introductory text for anyone interested in alcoholism. However, a lack of clear refences and no bibliography is a limitation for students wishing to gain more detailed information.
