Book Description

Dr Aric Sigman provides clear guidance to help us protect the next generation from the worst excesses of our drinking culture.

Product Description

We are a nation that loves to drink. And we're passing the habit on to our children. But a growing body of compelling new evidence about the dangers of alcohol consumption at a young age will force us to reconsider the entire way we view alcohol and young people. As parents, we need to talk to our children about alcohol but many of us are not sure what to say. In this essential book, Dr Aric Sigman ties up all the latest medical research and cultural issues and puts them into context. Most importantly he addresses drinking not just as a teenage problem but as an integral part of our history and culture. It will lead us to understand how the way we view alcohol impacts directly upon our chidlren's present and future health, wellbeing and academic success, and it will answer the question, 'how can I reconcile my enjoyment of drinking with ensuring my child grows up knowing how to drink sensibly?'.

Alcohol Nation 20 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a well written, easy to read and pretty up to date exploration of the drug alcohol. I contains the basic facts and many academic references of new research and recent updates of our knowledge of this the most abused drug of choice in the UK. It would be useful for anyone in the caring professions and for parents and carers of children to read. The references are mainly English/UK, canada and South Africa which reflects on the authors experience. There is one glaring mistake in the facts in relation to the new way of categorising drugs (The Nutt scale) devised by Professor Nutt and his colleagues. The author suggest that alcohol is top of that list when in fact it is fifth out of the 20 most commonly misused drugs. The book also lacks any insight into the common myths about alcohol which are perpetuated constantly in the media and passed on from peers to peer and parents to children. These myths drive a lot of the dangerous use and misuse of alcohol in our nation. All in all a very useful book to inform the public about what is without a doubt the drug of choice that is causing our adults and children serious health risks.

Rambling, boring, badly written . . . 16 Aug 2011

Mr Sigman seems to be very naive. Please tell us something we DON'T know - and perhaps have an editor translate the UK slang. Readers would be better informed by attending a few AA meetings.
