Product Description

No one does gothic quite a beautifully or quite as smartly as Alchemy Gothic. Their new Tarot deck combines enchanting fantasy art with clever and unique perspectives on the Major Arcana of traditional Tarot. Alchemy 1977 England Tarot takes you on a journey through mysterious and provocative realms.

The Alchemy Tarot Deck is a dark, gothic set of 78 cards. The Alchemy 1977 England Tarot is a darker tarot with a horror edge. Many of the scenes on the majors feature grinning skeletons, while the court have a dark fantasy feel. The minor arcana don't have scenes, but the suit elements are decorated to fit the theme.

The illustrations on The Alchemy England deck are gorgeous and quite unusual, they dont follow the Rider-Whaite deck at all.

I was slightly confused by the black roses till I looked it up online and realised they represented Wands! The Rest of the Minors are nice to look at, I like the gold pentacles on a lush green background, the swords are highly decorated and the cups are nice but a little dark. The Courts are more gothic in feel, skeletal knights, Queens and Kings with the odd dragon thrown in for good measure. I am not so bothered by the Minors being so highly detailed.

The Majors are great and have a real Josh Kirby/Terry Pratchet/Discworld feel to them, the skeletal Heirophant looks just like the Discworld Death to me.

The cards are small but the cardstock is good and I dont feel that they will fall apart with constant use. They read straight away and are very chatty, I think they will be my regular deck from now on.

All in all, a very good purchase.

Like the major arcana, would have given the deck 5 stars but feel the minor cards
let the deck down somewhat.
Still pleased to own one.

The cards are a bit smaller than usual in this Tarot Deck, maybe done to save money. A pity really, because it's small size doesn't do the artwork justice. A local new age shop sold me my first deck for £17.99. Like a fool that is always parted with his money, I bought it. Regardless of the fact that I've known the shop owners for a while now, the moral of this tale is.... He who supports rip-off Britain's economy during an economic downturn caused by greed, when it's cheaper to buy from abroad, that still works out cheaper after overseas shipping costs are included.... Is an absolute idiot for propping up greedy backstreet shopkeepers paying extortionate overheads.

These tarot cards have beautiful illustrations on them and are great quality, at a lower price than in the local shops!

Disappointment! 12 Sep 2012
By )O( TarotFan - Published on Amazon.com

When I look for new tarot decks one of the first things I look at is the art work, and the images shown here intrigued me enough to buy the deck (there were not as many pictures up then as there are now). But after the deck arrived and I looked the cards over I immediately found several issues that ruined the cards for me.

First, and least problematic, they are very small, the size of an ordinary deck of playing cards, and the border takes up much of the area on the face of the cards.

Second, not only do the cards not really follow the Rider-Waite system, many of the images do not relate to what the card is supposed to symbolize. Example: a weird little imp sitting on an ink pot for "The Hermit".

Third: the artwork just seems an excuse to put gothic images on paper, and really not even good gothic images. They look like sample art from a tattoo book. None of the female characters appear to be strong, powerful, wise, or insightful; instead they are half-naked bimbos with vacuous expressions. The nudity is not the problem, I have no problem with the nudity,it is, rather, the use of it here. Its kind of like reimagining the Tarot to include pole dancers portraying all of the female images.

Fourth: The minor arcana are just pip cards. Boring, and you better know your cards cold, or you'll be looking them up in the LWB that comes with it (and from going through that, buying an actual book would be a necessity also). The kings are dragons (which I found odd - this isn't a dragon deck), there are both knight and knave (no page) where the grim reaper appears a LOT, and the queens are mostly disappointing, although the queen of swords is, by far, the best female image in the deck.

Although this deck may work for some, it was a disappointment for me. But, at least it is being put to some use. My boyfriend is now going through it looking for tattoo ideas.

Beautiful, rich, amazing deck 11 Jun 2012
By Elizabeth - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Cards
The imagery on this deck is rich and will be appreciated if you are a goth fan -- and may even earn the appreciation of some non goth fans.

Llewelyn states, "Alchemy 1977 is famous around the globe for their stunning gothic artwork and steampunk accessories. Fans of this iconic brand will recognize and appreciate the powerful and seductive images in this extraordinary tarot deck. This captivating mix of art from world famous gothic illustrators ranges from traditional horror to lush supernatural scenes to medieval fantasy."

Kings are dragons: what fun! And the suit of wands has been replaced with black roses: a nice touch. The cards themselves have me feeling I am in a dark and wonderful world. A werewolf makes an appearance. There is a tattooed faery on Temperance. There are lots of skulls. The cards are lustrous and detailed and richly colored, and so is the world where these creatures live.

The only downside for me is that I don't read plain pips so well. If I come across the Six of Cups (three sets of two silver cups filled with what appears to be blood on a reddish backdrop), it is more difficult for me to read that card than if it were illustrated. Some of you will not have that problem.

This deck is a beautiful one by Fournier, distributed by Lo Scarabeo. It comes with a LWB and the backs with a skull pattern are non-reversible.

If you are into goth, it is a must-have.

Even if you aren't, this is a beautifully detailed, rich, dark deck.

Highly recommended.

Alchemy 1977 23 May 2012

This deck is lovely, in a gothic, passionate way. The art is exquisite. The cards are small enough to handle easily, but you will want a bright lamp to read them by, as the colors are dark, in keeping with the theme. As a long-time Oracle reader, I knew instntly this was a powerful deck. While the text for the card meanings is brief, one can obtain plenty of meanings from other sources easily available (internet, books,etc.). Enjoy, it's worth the money for the art,and if you are a Reader, it's worth it for the quality of the readings you will receive.

Just not for me. 5 Sep 2012
By Leirda - Published on Amazon.com

I wasn't really sure how to rate this deck because it's definitely not for me, but that doesn't make it a bad deck.

The problem was, I thought it would be more magically artistic, but it was instead very punk rock/metal/death inspired. I just can't get into a deck like that. The minor arcana are not illustrated, and most of the face cards and Major Arcana have skulls in them. If anyone knows the "Chemical Romance" poster with the dragon and the angel holding each other then those are what these cards are like (and that image is also one of the cards - The Lover). Most of the Major Arcana and face cards have skulls in them, as does the back of the cards. I love Gothic, Victorian, dark stuff, but this was too punk for me.

It's my fault, honestly, I don't think I did enough research into the cards to realize that these aren't Gothic Victorian, but Punk Rock. You have to be one with the cards, part of the cards, feel inspired by the cards...but when I looked at these cards all I saw were a bunch of clattering skulls. Which is cool if you're in to that, but I'm not...

...at least not for my tarot cards.

Beautiful & Dark 7 Dec 2012
By L.M.Fields - Published on Amazon.com

I don't use Tarot cards, I admire them and I let their artwork inspire me when I need story ideas. The artwork is beautiful but know that there are many cards which repeat the pattern, some may not like that. It made me think of playing cards when I saw that. I would have preferred a different bit of artwork for every single card but I am not disappointed.
