The first four studio albums plus a CD of singles for less than 20 quid? Don't mind if I do! The studio albums are remastered and sonically, they are superb. Some of the material is a little patchy, but the whole package surely deserves 5 stars; In the Flat Field is Bowie-esque, bizarre goth-glam-punk (check the lyrics of 'St Vitus Dance :-D); Mask shows a rich textural development to the band's sound, with slightly campy humour; The Sky's Gone Out is perhaps their weakest album, straying too far into arty territory (for my liking anyway); Burning from the Inside is great, including the fabulous 'Hope' and showcasing David J's extraordinary bass playing on 'She's in Parties', in its extended form, with a dub-inspired outro.
The singles disc has, in addition to the singles themselves, a few great B-sides, including the fantastic 'Scopes'. It doesn't include the original studio version of 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' (this is available on the compilation 'Crackle', but the version that is included (the 'Tomb Raider Mix' - from the Hammersmith Palais 1981 live show with a studio vocal track) is still pretty spectacular!
The packaging is okay - the box itself is nice enough, but the discs come in quite cheap little cardboard sleeves. Then again, what more can you ask for at this price? Just buy it!
I'd also urge you to try the 2008 'swansong' album 'Go Away White', which is great. Check out 'Black Stone Heart' for a leetle taster...
