A fabulous priced box containing all four studio albums and a fifth disc of selected A's and B's including many tracks remastered for the very first time since 1988. Too many highs to discuss here but newly minted third and forth albums The Sky's Gone Out and Burning From The Inside alone make this box more than essential. Fan club only gem, a stripped bare take on Greenbaum's Spirit In The Sky makes its digital debut on disc five. This fifth disc also features many more key Bauhaus numbers outside of the albums; Ziggy Stardust, The Sanity Assassin, Dark Entries, Crowds, Terror Couple Kill Colonel, the brilliant Watch That Grandad Go and no Bauhaus comp would be complete without of course arguably their defining moment; Bela Lugosi's Dead. Despite the hacks of the day citing Bauhaus as doom and gloom merchants, they were also full of humour, humour so often missed, you just needed to know where to look that's all...and here is a great start. Ten out of ten.

Mastered a bit too loudly, but not brickwalled and a really nice, clear, fat sound on the albums, much more natural sounding than the previous BEGA / BBL catalogue number CDs.

Don't throw away your old CDs though, because the full list of 1979-1983 studio tracks NOT included are:

1 Bela Lugosi's Dead (original single version)
2 Boys (Bela B-side)
3 Dark Entries (demo fragment from Bela B-side)
4 Untitled (Dark Entries B-side)
5 A God in an Alcove (Flexidisc version)
6 Terror Couple Kill Colonel (alternate version from its 7" B-side)
7 David Jay-Peter Murphy-Kevin Haskins-Daniel Ash (The Passion of Lovers B-Side)
8 Harry (from the Searching For Satori 12")
9 Satori (Kick in the Eye B-Side)
10 Party of the First Part (Ziggy Stardust B-side)
11 Departure (She's in Parties B-side)
12 Here's the Dub (She's in Parties B-side)

The first four studio albums plus a CD of singles for less than 20 quid? Don't mind if I do! The studio albums are remastered and sonically, they are superb. Some of the material is a little patchy, but the whole package surely deserves 5 stars; In the Flat Field is Bowie-esque, bizarre goth-glam-punk (check the lyrics of 'St Vitus Dance :-D); Mask shows a rich textural development to the band's sound, with slightly campy humour; The Sky's Gone Out is perhaps their weakest album, straying too far into arty territory (for my liking anyway); Burning from the Inside is great, including the fabulous 'Hope' and showcasing David J's extraordinary bass playing on 'She's in Parties', in its extended form, with a dub-inspired outro.

The singles disc has, in addition to the singles themselves, a few great B-sides, including the fantastic 'Scopes'. It doesn't include the original studio version of 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' (this is available on the compilation 'Crackle', but the version that is included (the 'Tomb Raider Mix' - from the Hammersmith Palais 1981 live show with a studio vocal track) is still pretty spectacular!

The packaging is okay - the box itself is nice enough, but the discs come in quite cheap little cardboard sleeves. Then again, what more can you ask for at this price? Just buy it!

I'd also urge you to try the 2008 'swansong' album 'Go Away White', which is great. Check out 'Black Stone Heart' for a leetle taster...

Firstly, I’m glad to see the Derek Tompkins (R.I.P.) dialogue had been re-instated at the end of ‘The Sky’s Gone Out’

If you already own the two Andrew Brooksbank curated box sets then you’ll probably just skip ‘In The Flat Field’ and ‘Mask’, like I did, and go straight to the last three discs.
Overall, a very good job on the re-mastering, bright and punchy, but still managing to capture the intention of the original recording.
At first I did feel a little disappointed that ‘Press The Eject…’ was not included, but after playing the old CD, came to the conclusion that there was probably not a lot more a re-master would offer this release.
The 5th disc, ‘Singles’ hold a good number of recordings from the archive (both sides of the notorious Fan Club vinyl), and it’s nice to hear the non-album singles, and single edit versions with updated treatment.

The albums plus the singles at a reasonable price that surpasses any best of, from the band that really put the gothic into gothic almost unintentionally without trying fabulous!!!

Amazing value, 5 CDs for the price of one! There is certainly space to squeeze in the few missing bonus tracks referred to in other reviews; but the Bauhaus nut who wants 100% completeness would probably prefer to buy the individual CDs each with it's own extras. For someone like me who had most of these albums on vinyl when they came out (& has since sold them all!) this is a wonderful little box set, nicely packaged too! I'd forgotten just how good Bauhaus sound.. Kicks today's half-hearted over-produced rubbish music right in the eye..

One of my top favorite bands from the 80's and the original Goth band. I had all these albums on a mixture of Vinyl and Tape. This box set has brought my collection up to date. A very underrated band that is worth checking out if you like good music with lots of interesting and intelligent lyrics of both a dark, bright and sometimes upbeat nature! These boys did Dub long long before anyone else to!
